Looking for a break that'll make you feel as free as a bird? Swoop down for a stay at Magpie Meadow, a back to basics Norfolk site with fab mega-sized pitches and far-reaching rural views. The site is also conveniently located 15 minutes’ drive from top coastal spots like Mundesley and Bacton beach. You can expect a warm welcome and relaxed vibe here – this site bills itself as 'family-friendly, dog-friendly, cat-friendly… and generally friendly'. It's also an eco-friendly place within easy reach of public transport options: those skipping the car can arrive via North Walsham railway station (20 minutes' walk), then get out and about on miles of bike-friendly trails (including the nearby Quiet Lanes Network and car-free Weavers' Way). This community-run spot is run on the basis that 'nature does it best'; as such, the site is proud that it's totally free of tarmac tracks and manicured hedges. Parts of the grounds are also gradually being rewilded with native flowers and trees, and limits on guest numbers mean that the whole middle of the meadow is always left as clear as it looks in the photos. In terms of facilities, Magpie Meadow is low on frills, with just two flushing loos, a low-impact shower, drinking water and a washing-up point provided; you're welcome to bring your own toilet with you. Barbecues are allowed here (as long as they're at least 60cm/two feet off the ground and burning charcoal only) and bundles of sustainably sourced logs are available to buy on site (although please note campfires may be banned during particularly hot and dry weather).

Me gustó The size of the pitch and the area of wooded cover with your own picnic bench.
Toilets and showers ample and washing up facilities close by.
Amazing recycling system.

No me gustó Needs better singage when finding site.

Some other campers unwilling to become less noisy after 11pm and some who lite fires in areas that are a danger to themselves and other campers.

Perfect little campsite. Toilets and little extras were just enough.

Me gustó Fabulous campsite. Large pitches surrounded by beautiful meadow. We were a woodland pitch so we had some trees and picnic table for shade. Firepit provided. Proper flushing toilets.
No hot water on site - washing up sink provided (with helpful dish drainers) so take your kettle to heat water. Hand pump shower (take your own hot water into the cubicle and pressurise the pump by hand).

Kids enjoyed the chess set and clearly labelled recycling bins.

Short drive to Mundesley Beach.

No me gustó Nothing. Only improvement would be a proper shower to wash the sand off after a beach day.

Tina and James were welcoming and attentive hosts. The site was beautiful…

Me gustó Tina and James were welcoming and attentive hosts. The site was beautiful – we enjoyed one of the woodland plots – which offered some privacy. A great location to go for walks from.

Me gustó What a lovely campsite! Small, quiet, clean. The individual pitches are enormous. The 'woodland' pitches all have a little area in-between the trees with a bench and a firepit. Owners are extremely kind and friendly. Cold running water in the sinks and loos, showers are pressurised handpumps - heat up your own water if you want a hot shower.

Spacious pitch, loved the woodland area and picnic bench for extra shade…

Me gustó Great location, ten minutes for Mundesley beach which is a lovely sandy beach. Owners were very helpful, polite and responsive. Fire pit on pitch with wood, kindling, fire starters and marshmallows available to buy. Decent sized pitches, peaceful location. We had a great stay! :)

Touring the Norfolk countryside on foot is a top-notch pursuit, whether that involves taking a constitutional on the peaceful country lanes around the site or day-long treks along the length and breadth of the car-free Weavers’ Way (five minutes' drive). Seaside strolls can also be arranged if you settle down here; the stretch of coast between Bacton and Mundesley is particularly pleasant (both 20 minutes). Boating in the Broads is another brill bet, especially if you're curious about the area's birdlife. Wroxham (20 minutes) has several local businesses that hire out vessels for the day, but professionally organised cruises are also on offer if your rowing skills leave something to be desired. Wroxham Barns (15 minutes) is also worth dropping by – this one-stop attraction is home to a shopping village, kids’ play farm and several food outlets. Newcomers curious about the area's history can head down to Felbrigg Hall (15 minutes), a rather regal National Trust estate. The community-run Museum of the Broads (15 minutes), meanwhile, houses well-preserved examples of the craft that cruised these waters in days gone by.
