  • Countryside setting on the outskirts of Johannesburg
  • Half an hour from Cradle of Humankind and several game reserves
  • Outdoor pool, play area, indigenous garden and small-game viewing
Peaceful countryside vibes and busy city days, hours among the animals at game reserves and zoos, the Cradle of Humankind and the cradle of South African political uprisings… At Country Park Caravan and Camping, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from Muldersdrift and 40 minutes from Johannesburg city centre, it surely is the best of many worlds within easy reach. Settle in for blissful hols at this site on the very outskirts of Jo’burg – get comfortable among the indigenous trees and plants of the veldt as birds flit by overhead, herds of blesbok and impala roam in the near distance, and the cries of jackals drift through the site while the sun sets in spectacular African fashion... There’s plenty to do on site if that sounds altogether too laid back: the kids will be kept entertained with a play area, a lapa will keep kids and grownups out of the sun and meeting other guests, and there’s an outdoor pool for cooling dips after days out and about exploring. What is there to explore around here? Plenty: you could trip around the Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden 15 minutes away, meet people of Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Ndebele and Basotho origin at Lesedi Cultural Village 25 minutes from base, see the Cradle of Humankind within half an hour, and wander around several game reserves within about 20 minutes.

Local attractions

Spending a day or two (or three) in Johannesburg is an absolute must when staying this close to the city. It’s about 40 minutes’ drive to the centre and there’s loads to keep drawing you back: there are museums, science discovery centres, malls, casinos, markets and a zoo, as well as a host of apartheid-related stops and the highly recommended Soweto township tours. Once city days are truly exhausted, there’s plenty else hereabouts to keep the whole family occupied: start by getting the lay of the land with a balloon safari (taking to the skies about half an hour away), stick closer to terra firma with paintball, horseback trails, quadding, abseiling and go-karting 15 minutes away or by getting lost at Honeydew Mazes (five minutes), and get way closer to terra firma – under it, in fact – at Wild Cave Adventures or Sterkfontein Caves. Watery escapades are like drops in the ocean round here: plentiful. There’s a waterpark less than five minutes away, a scuba centre within 10 minutes and rafting excursions about 30 minutes from base. Want more time walking with animals? Guests can be at the crocodile park in a snap, or head farther afield for cheetah centres, elephant sanctuaries, aquariums and the famous Pilanesberg Game Reserve.
