Tasty times are on the cards for those staying at Mini Camping De Hooiberg, as this adults-only site in the North Brabant countryside is part of an organic cheese farm – how very fab. Fancy a bite of kaas (a handy bit of lingo around here…) flavoured with mustard-pepper, ginger, truffles or Italian spices? It’s all here, produced at the on-site dairy from the herd of cows that will be your temporary neighbours. If you’re here on a Saturday, sign up for a farm tour to see where the magic happens; stay for two or more nights and they’ll throw in a free chunk of cheese too. Stocking up on all the cheeses is easily done at the site’s farm shop, which also has meats and other (mostly organic) regional products if you’d like to expand your diet. Further supplies can be picked up in the town of Bladel, five minutes’ drive away – there are also restaurants and cafés in town if you’re in the mood to have someone else sort the catering. Between eating sessions, guests might like to spend time reading papers or watching TV in the site’s recreation room or using the site-wide wifi service to stream some entertainment. Working up an appetite for more cheese can be done with outings to the nearby adventure park, zoo and indoor ski centre, or with wanders around Eindhoven (half an hour’s drive away).

Once you’ve made pals with the cows at the farm, turn attentions to their rather more exotic cousins at Zoo Veldhoven (20 minutes’ drive) or Beekse Bergen safari park (25 minutes), where more than a thousand creatures live in the largest wildlife park in all of the Benelux countries. Keen to keep the calories burning so you can feast on more cheese? Take to the trees at Klimrijk Brabant (20 minutes), don your ski gear to hit the indoor slopes of Montana Snow Centre (25 minutes) or sign up for waterskiing and wakeboarding at Beach Park Aquabest (half an hour). There are lots of bike-riding opportunities too: either in the woods along the Belgian border or on the mountain bike trails outside the site. Museum-wandering also counts on that front too, you know, so you may like to sort urban outings to the Philips museum in Eindhoven (half an hour) or arty strolls around the collections in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (45 minutes), home to the Noordbrabants museum and Jheronimus Bosch art centre.
