  • Family-friendly lle de Ré site 300 metres from the beach
  • Two pools, kids' club, restaurant and shop
  • A 10-minute drive to Saint-Martin-de-Ré and 30 minutes to La Rochelle
It's 30 years since Île de Ré was connected to France by bridge, but you’d barely know it: it seems to occupy its own time and space, an Atlantic colony of dunes and pines and white villages, scented by oyster beds and poppy fields… The place might attract fast Parisians and famed film stars, but the pace is slow and it’s such a superb spot for cycling that many don’t bother with their cars: this is a stellar French spot for stellar French hols. Contemplate the lot, and your itinerary in it, from your sun lounger at Camping les Grenettes. The beach is a couple of minutes’ walk away (300 metres) but if that journey seems too strenuous, you can stretch out by the heated pools on site (while the kids are entertained at the playground and the daily activities in summer). A shop and bakery are on site for your convenience too, and after a hard day watching clouds scud across the sky, you can then totter a few steps to the restaurant and bar. Once you’re ready (no rush), hire bikes and pedal round the isle: picnic on the dunes, hunt for crabs and see if you can spot any famous faces doing the same thing…

Local attractions

You’re never far from anywhere on Ile de Ré; main town Saint-Martin is 10 minutes by car. This walled citadel of colourful buildings has forts to explore (part of a UNESCO Heritage site), markets to rummage and plentiful spots for lazy lunching. Get your bearings by ascending the bell tower for views of the whole island and afterwards (or before, depending on laziness) take the wildlife trail around the town. The beach by the site is popular with families and surfers, but it's worth visiting Sainte-Marie (10 minutes), an ancient and vineyard-fringed village whose beach is quieter and wilder, and a cracking spot for crab hunters and shell seekers. If it’s thrills you’re seeking, try kitesurfing at Rivedoux (also 10 minutes). An hour away, the Marais Poitevin is a protected marsh area of the Poitou-Charente region, where you can walk, bike or paddle your way around its myriad of creeks to spot waders, otters, eel and herons. The old port of La Rochelle (30 minutes) makes a splendid maritime-themed excursion you can do without getting wet… wander the harbour and say hi to the fish in the aquarium. For a contrast, Vertigo Parc has zipwires, ropes and treetop thrills for landlubbers.

Liked: The peace and quiet and the chalet.

Disliked: The security deposit to hire a bike. 200 euros per bike. With 4 of us it was not viable.

Electric optional grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The site and pool

Disliked: We paid a €400 deposit to rent bikes and we’re told the funds would be returned same day. 3 days later and we still don’t have the money and can’t get hold of anyone. We were situated under a low pine tree, was very cold and the ground was very messy.

Avoid, there are better campsites elsewhere on the island.

Electric optional grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Pool nice, bar was OK, but expensive. The band, 'Tracklist' who played on Thursday 11th August were fantastic.

Disliked: Pitches - VERY tight access - we deliberately booked this site as they stated they accepted twin axle caravans, but the pitch was too small and access was tight, certainly not enough room to reverse caravan in, had to slowly manoeuvre with motor mover from roadway. Another caravanner didn't have a mover, so we helped push them (along with 6 others) to get his T/A into his pitch. Pitches sand so once jockey wheel in sand it digs in and won't move. Sand EVERYWHERE! Water - very few taps on the site worked. None near our pitch worked and the drains were blocked also. Toilets & showers - very few, some main washroom buildings were boarded up and small newer temporary looking ones in their place. No seats on toilets and no toilet paper in cubicles, just some outside. No soap provided at sinks. Often had to queue for toilet or showers. Had to pay €125 deposit for 5x wristbands to enter pool - never had that before! Parking - pitches too small to get car on with caravan & awning, so had to park elsewhere, picked up a puncture there. Shop had limited range.

Liked: Ile De-Re is a beautiful Island, do not be put off travelling to this Island, the cycling is great.

Disliked: The site we were allocated was just a sandy square with no grass. Our problem began on Thursday 9th June, we were kept awake until around 2am as there was a 40th Birthday party being held on site in a hall and outside near the restaurant. We thought this unusual as most sites do not allow music after midnight but decided it must be a one off. Then on Saturday 11th June there were two parties one being held, one next to the restaurant and one behind the swimming pool in a hall. As we were camping in a tent we were unable to sleep so at 12.30am we got up and went for a walk to see what was happening. It seemed like there was a compere who had everyone cheering and shouting in the party (near the restaurant) and this went on until near 2am. As we walked further around the site we then heard and saw another party in in a hall to the rear of the swimming pool with everyone shouting until 5.30am when some even walked past our tent talking extremely loudly. The situation was unbelievably hellish as we were unable to sleep for most of the night and only snatching a few hours at dawn, had we of been in a camper van we would have left the site. We complained to the receptionist later that morning who said that we needed to put this into writing, we did and have not received a reply. We can’t express how exhausted we were all day. There should be a responsible person/contact/security on site who people can contact in a situation like this when out of hours. We decided not to stay any longer and packed up and left that morning, exhausted and vowing never to return. We feel that this should not be happening on a campsite where most people usually retire to bed early. We spoke to another tourist on leaving the campsite and he told us they often have a lot of Corporate Events that go on late.
