You'll want to bracket your hol here with a week before and another week (or two) after. For you'll need heaps of time to lounge around this peaceful place in the Lot-et-Garonne, to facilitate amnesia about work/ life back home via a massage or yoga session, cast off among the quiet surroundings of the site lake, and explore the many sights and activities nearby, like checking out the local vineyards. (And if it's white wine or champers you come back with, you can hire a fridge to keep it all cool.) Based 15 minutes' walk from the town of Saint-Etienne-de-Villereal, La Parenthèse - Camping Les Ormes is a peaceful and luxury lakeside site in the Périgord, three kilometres from Villereal and nine from Monflanquin. As well as the yoga, massage and fishing, a roomy pool and tiddlers' paddling pool are also around on this well-equipped 10-hectare site, along with a playground and a pétanque court, ping pong, tennis courts, table football and dedicated spaces for football and volleyball. The pool is next to the swish site snack bar, dishing up cold drinks, coffee and quick bites like Hamburger Périgordin to have alongside the water. Other tasty options are the pizza, roast chicken and salads of the takeaway, and the local cuisine and international dishes of the restaurant, which you can sample next to the open fire, on the patio or under the pergola.

Local attractions

Drive three kilometres from the site's local town of Saint-Etienne-de-Villereal to reach Villereal, a 13th-century bastide town on the Dropt river, and from there head south to Monflanquin and Villeneuve-sur-Lot. All three towns are worth a day each: make for Villereal on a Saturday morning for its lively market, held since the 14th century; to Monflanquin for its House of the Black Prince and a Thursday market run since 1256, and to Villeneuve-sur-Lot for its spectacular setting on the river and views of the valley from the 13th-century Pont Vieux bridge. You could also take a historic trip to Château de Gavaudun, 16 kilometres away overlooking the Lède river, and Château de Bridoire 37 kilometres away, at Riberac; go downstairs at the latter for a family room of traditional French games, and above ground for the likes of archery and giant chess.
