The Paddock Campsite: Grass pitch

General

  • Quiet site on the north-east coast between Filey and Scarborough
  • A 15-minute walk from Cayton Bay beach via a traffic-free path
  • Farm shop and café next door; pub 10 minutes' walk away

Some visitors wax lyrical about North Yorkshire’s coastline, while others are rather fonder of its countryside… so it’s handy indeed that you can easily check out both aspects of the county’s scenery during a stay at The Paddock Campsite.

This quiet, friendly site is just outside the village of Lebberston, on the coast between Filey and Scarborough (both of which are within a 10-minute drive). For your seaside strolls, a traffic-free path runs down to the sands of Cayton Bay beach – it’ll take you about 15 minutes to get down to the beach, a wide bay that welcomes dogs all year round and is popular with birdwatchers, fossil hunters and rockpoolers as well as those seeking coastal walks or days spent on the sand.

And for your country ambles, a drive of 15 minutes or so gets you up to the outer edges of the North York Moors National Park – although you can get a decent enough taste of the local scenery with the rural views around the park itself if you're not in the mood to travel far.

Handy bonuses for guests at this site are a farm shop and café pretty much next door, and a pub about 10 minutes’ walk away. Barbecues and campfires are permitted on site if you fancy using some of that farm shop produce for alfresco cookery.

Firepits are available on site to help with outdoor food prep and keeping warm; other facilities on site include three hot showers, three toilets, a clean water tap and chemical waste disposal facilities.

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Good location, quiet and non rowdy on an evening.

    Disliked:

Run down facilities, site just looked messy with things thrown into corners, in general very expensive for what it is. Much smaller than seems on photos. Just in general looks like it needs a good refresh and some TLC.

    Disliked:

I passed this site twice before I realised it was where I had booked. Poor signage to tell you the name of the site. Member of staff was polite, but did not ask for my name just showed me to the pitch. Their version of hard standing is some stone tipped onto the grass. The facilities consisted of 4 narrow room contains a shower, toilet and wash basin, 2 rooms seemed to be permanently engaged. There was a washing up station to one side, on the other side the only tap for fresh water and a poor chemical toilet disposal point the rinse tap of which was often connected to another hose. Access to fill a motorhome with fresh water was poor but possible early week but impossible on the Saturday morning as a camper van had been given a pitch right in front of the facilities. The site also suffers from a lot of flies. At the weekend there was less than 2 metres between pitches. We left a day early.

i arrived at the site and was directed to a sign with a telephone number on it from wich i got no answer in fact it seemed I was hung up on 3 times,so i had a look around the site/field and coulnt find a suitable pitch for my tent it being quite sloping ground unsuitable for tents ok for vans with leveling devices but not tents so i left in disgust even though i had pre-paid for the pitch

Rebecca was very welcoming and very helpful, explaining how to use everything and what’s was available locally. Plenty of room between each site. Great splash rooms for showering. A short walk to stunning Cayton Bay.

    Disliked:

Having to park the car on the lane outside the site was a bit of pain when I accidentally left some things we needed in the car but we managed to park a bit nearer the second day so it wasn’t such a problem.

    Nothing

    Disliked:

    Disgusting toilet facilities
Being accosted by millions of flies when trying to access the toilets and within our tent
We bought fly spray which was useless as more flies would just replace them
The toilet facilities were not cleaned
Couldn’t relax after being out and about all day
I am discussed that pitch up have allowed this campsite to be advertised they way it is on your site it’s nothing like it
It has mole hills and holes all over the site
I fell down a hole and was lucky I didn’t sprain my ankle but was in pain
Have you ever actually been to this site ??????
It’s false advertisement and should be taken down
Others were also experiencing the nightmare we left after 2 nights and reported it to the owners
As I said to them you should be ashamed to allow people to stay there and take money off people which insults their intelligence dignity and respect
Would they like to live outside their own house with the flies and filthy toilets

Local attractions

This is a most handy spot for getting out to a couple of North Yorkshire’s most loved seaside towns, so plan for days at the beach and animal park in Filey or taking in the castle, Sea Life Centre and Alpamare waterpark in Scarborough (before hitting the beach again, of course). Both are around a 10-minute drive away.

For another view on the coast, grab your binoculars and wander quietly to see what’s in residence at RSPB Bempton Cliffs seabird centre (20 minutes’ drive). Or for some days away from the shoreline, head out to meet the creatures at Playdale Farm Park (10 minutes), sample Yorkshire’s first single malt at Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery (15 minutes) or try out the inflatable course and all manner of watersports at North Yorkshire Water Park (20 minutes).

Fancy leaving the car behind for the day? Stash the keys somewhere safe and set forth on foot for Cayton Bay beach, Scarborough Fair Collection & Vintage Transport Museum or a dip at Flower of May swimming pool – all are about 15 minutes away on foot.
