  • Peaceful farm with pond and walking paths
  • Farm shop, gift shop, café and furniture for sale
  • Toilet and shower blocks with disabled access
Keep the kids busy at Thorpe Farm Centre near Co. Durham's Barnards Castle... if dipping and nature spotting at the peaceful pond doesn't sway them, seeing the animals in their paddocks or the many walking paths straight from the site surely will. The farm also has its 18th-century Peel House, home to a gift shop, a café serving breakfast and Sunday lunch, a farm shop selling fresh local produce including bread, milk, bacon, sausages and eggs, and – rather unusual but very fab – a reclamation barn selling furniture, antiques and collectables. Facilities include toilet and shower blocks with disabled access; fresh water and a chemical disposal unit. Dogs are very welcome but must be kept on leads while on site.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The facilities are very clean and well looked after.
Lovely campsite for kids as have kids play park and a lot of animals, kids loved the farm area.
There is a softplay but we never needed to use this.
Showers and toilets were well maintenanced which is key for camping.

Disliked: This isn’t about the campsite but something to bear in mind it is beside a busy road so the traffic noise can be heard. So if you are wanting peaceful the road noise did prevent us from having a good sleep. We had to go and buy sound proof headphones for sleeping. Like I say this isn’t the camp site fault but something to bear in mind.

Liked: Facilities, good toilets and shop. Site layout was good. Loved the animals. Added bonus of Antiques barn and garden centre. Perfect venue for visiting all the local castles and beyond.

Disliked: Sorry, you cant get away from the site being on the A66 and constant traffic noise , but atleast it made it easy to get to places and no long country roads!

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Facilities new, clean

Disliked: Too close to the A66, basically behind a bush off the side of the road. Very noisy all night with lorries ans traffic.
Constant beeping all night from a box near the facilities. So not near us but we could still hear all night.

Liked: Site was very clean and well maintained. Shop was well stocked with more than just essentials. Located near to a lovely hotel/pub serving good food and it was dog friendly. Great walks from the site. Site had everything we needed and staff were friendly and helpful.

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Friendliness of staff upon checkin and during visiting the shop and restaurant. Children's play area next to the restaurant area is a nice play area.
Toilet area next to pitches very clean and efficient.
Friendly and quiet site.
Kids enjoyed themselves on the tyre swings in the middle of the site.
Only thing i that was a problem for us was our hook up lead didnt reach the electric as it was in the spot next door but one to our pitch, but the staff offered an extension to lend if we needed it.

Local attractions

If you want to investigate the surrounding area by foot, a shortcut to the A66 gives access to many more walking paths as well as cycling trails; a map is available at the site shop with details. The seventeenth century country house of Rokeby Park is just around the corner from the farm, and it's about ten minutes' drive to Barnards Castle, an old market town with pubs, shops, restaurants, the Bowes Museum and its castle high on a rock above the River Tees. The farm is nine miles west of Scotch Corner in the countryside of Teesdale and 15 miles from Richmond in the Yorkshire Dales. Raby Castle, Eggleston Hall, High Force Waterfall (England’s highest, foam fans) and Middleton in Teesdale are also within driving distance.
