Feed the animals around the farm

  • Among fields and woods on a working farm in Hertfordshire countryside
  • Free farm entry for farm trails, woodland play and daily activities
  • Café, bakery, shop and pub, all serving fresh produce from the farm
Amid the tiny villages, broad fields and winding lanes of Hertfordshire, the friendly site of Church Farm is a place of many opportunities. Move to a different pace with a stay at this lovely 170-acre working farm, where you see farming and wildlife up close… and hopefully have a splendid time while you're doing it. There's usually a charge for visitors to get stuck in to the farm's activities, but camping guests will get free entry, so they can wander the farm trails, hit the woodland play area or join in the daily activities. The pigs, goats, sheep and hens on this mixed eco farm may well come and say hello; the whole family can join in the feeding sessions and kids will most likely love foraging through the undergrowth to find eggs for breakfast (have them with just-baked bread from the farm’s ovens). Or let someone else do breakfast for a change: the team dishes them up all day at the café. In the evenings, build your own campfire and grill bangers bought from the farm shop or head to the village pub for home-cooked and locally sourced food. Camping rotates around several fields throughout the season so that the grass can always be kept at its best. On-site facilities include outdoor gas showers, cold water sinks and chemical and compost toilets. Dogs are welcome (for no extra charge) at this ecological nonprofit farm, which also focuses on providing training and work experience for people with special needs, and are allowed in the farm café, shop, on the site and in the local pub.

Liked Nice views close to Knebworth

Disliked Very basic site but NOT basic prices. BACS facilities as expected but unclean

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Lorraine,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. We're pleased to hear you enjoyed the countryside views.

We're sorry to hear that aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations. Our cabins are advertised as rustic accommodation, offering a simple countryside experience rather than modern luxury, and we always aim to ensure guests know what to expect before they arrive.

We're also disappointed to hear your comments regarding the cleanliness of the facilities. Our shower and toilet blocks are checked and monitored daily by our team. In addition, there is a contact number displayed in the facilities so that guests can report any issues they notice between inspections, allowing us to respond as quickly as possible. Had we been made aware during your stay, we would have done our best to resolve the issue straight away.

We appreciate your feedback, as it helps us continue to improve the experience for all our guests.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (woodland)

Liked Loved everything about it. Loads for families but also some quiet forest spots.
Lovely little cafe, shop and pub. The working farm is a beautiful little extra.
Just a lovely peaceful weekend

Disliked Compost loos filled up quickly, possibly need emptying more often on a busy weekend.

From the manager: Hi Sarah, thank you so much for taking the time to leave us your feedback. We’re delighted to hear that you loved your stay and enjoyed the mix of family-friendly spaces and quieter woodland spots, as well as the café, shop, pub and our working farm.

We also really appreciate your feedback regarding the compost loos. We’ll take this on board and review our checks during particularly busy weekends to help ensure they are attended to more frequently.

Thank you again, and we hope to welcome you back for another peaceful weekend.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lots of space, well organised

Disliked Luton flight path, plane noise

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Dave, thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback. We are so happy to hear you enjoyed the space and organisation of our site. We are really sorry to hear you were so disturbed by planes going overhead, they don’t come all the time but come over us when the wind is coming from the west and normally not too loud as we are 20 miles from Luton, but can be heard if it’s a still day.

We hope to welcome you back to the farm.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (woodland)

Liked Amazing location pitching a tent in the woods.
Great facilities
Delicious food at the farm shop and good cafe on site
My lad loved the teddy bear hunt
Lots of animals to see
Great play areas for kids

Disliked It is advertised as a quiet campsite and you’re given a tel. Number to call for security if the noise from others is too loud after curfew, however there were multiple large groups of families making lots of noise a few hours beyond the recommended quiet period, so struggled with getting my youngest to sleep.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Becky,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us such a detailed review.

We’re delighted to hear you enjoyed the woodland camping, facilities, food from the farm shop and café, and that your son loved the teddy bear hunt. It’s also lovely to hear you enjoyed seeing the animals and making use of the play area.

We also appreciate your feedback regarding noise levels. During June and July, we do welcome a number of family groups camping with us, which can naturally make the site busier at times. Our security team regularly monitors the campsite to help ensure noise levels remain appropriate, particularly during quiet hours.

As our team monitors a range of different camping fields, we do encourage guests to call the security number provided if noise becomes an issue, as this allows us to respond and resolve concerns as quickly as possible.

Thank you again for your feedback, as it helps us continue to improve the experience for all our guests, and we hope to welcome you back.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Adequate space for car and gazebo. Not bothered by staff.

Disliked No response from emails sent
Told us to keep noise strictly to a minimum, but didn't mention loud music from two pubs either side of the fields. So loud you can hear the words.
The ground was appalling for camping, 4cm down it's layered with bricks. You can't get tent pegs in. It broke every peg we brought.
No place to put your rubbish or recycling.
Farm was small and disappointing.
Very close to air port so expect low flying planes noisy throughout the night.

From the manager: Hi Liane,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback.

We’re pleased to hear that you appreciated the space on your pitch and the relaxed approach from our team during your stay.

We’re sorry to hear that some aspects of the site were not what you expected. We do monitor our inbox daily and unfortunately cannot find any emails received from you, though we appreciate this may have been frustrating at the time.

We are also sorry to hear that the music disturbed your stay. The music you could hear was coming from an off-site venue in the village rather than from our campsite itself.

We are really sorry to hear you were so disturbed by planes going overhead. They don’t come over all the time, but do pass overhead when the wind is coming from the west. As we are around 20 miles from Luton Airport they are normally not too loud, although they can be heard more on still days.

Regarding the ground conditions, some areas of the field can naturally be firmer than others depending on weather conditions and pitch location, although we are sorry to hear this caused difficulties with your tent pegs during your stay.

We do appreciate all feedback and will take your comments on board as we continue to improve the experience for our guests.

Local attractions

Take the woodland trails on the site to spot the wildlife of the area, such as kites circling the skies, bats flitting in the trees, and barn owls hooting at night as you're getting toasty by the campfire (look out for badgers too). Off site, head to the Tudor pile of Knebworth Castle (20 minutes’ drive), to roam around the palatial house and grand gardens, have a brontosaurus encounter on the life-sized Dinosaur Trail and top it off by swinging like monkeys in the adventure playground. Or you can all reach for the skies at the Imperial War Museum Duxford (30 minutes), to get up close to Spitfires and Vulcans while wandering through a century of aviation history. Medieval Cambridge (45 minutes) makes a good day trip, where you can punt down the River Cam past the stately colleges, or picnic in the botanic gardens. Open-top tour buses make a sedate way to see the sights, or you can hire bikes (watch out for cobbles). Though part of the university, the Museum of Earth Sciences is geared towards young minds and hands-on experiences, from fossils to earthquakes and dinosaurs to volcanoes. After discovering the secrets of rocks, you could all try climbing: not many hills round here but Clip n Climb Cambridge has 20 indoor challenges for beginners and mountain goats alike.
