  • Adults-only park a couple of minutes' drive from the M5
  • Use as an overnight stopover or as a base for Cheltenham or Gloucester
  • Landscaped with mature shrubs, hedges and trees
Apart from a possible pitch on a tower block in the middle of a city, Briarfields Touring Park might be the most ‘leave your car at home’ site we’ve seen yet. Ditch the diesel guzzler or leave the motorhome on site and hitch a ride on one of the regular buses that pass right outside, leading to days’ worth of days out at Cheltenham (two miles away), Gloucester (six miles), Oxford, the Forest of Dean and the Cotswolds. And if you’re getting around under your own steam, the friendly family team at Briarfields can pick you up from local public transport when you arrive. Even on your own feet you’ll reach most of what you need quickly from the park: a pub and a newsagent are within a few minutes’ walk; an Indian restaurant, KFC and supermarket less than 15 minutes – and a caravan sales and spares dealership is a mile and a half away, just in case. Although Briarfields is only a couple of minutes from the M5 (it’s often used by guests on their way north or south as an overnight stopover), it’s been rather cleverly designed so you can think you’re slap bang in the middle of the countryside: the landscaped and the accommodation areas are edged throughout with mature shrubs, hedges and trees. Amenities are equally well looked after: the centrally placed amenities block is cleaned twice a day and has free hot showers for ladies, gents and disabled guests. Swing into reception when you arrive at Briarfields for reams of info, leaflets and maps on the many (many) things to do a bus ride away: buses run every ten minutes during the day and every 20 minutes in the evening to both Cheltenham and Gloucester, and another service to Oxford will give explorers about six hours in the city before heading back to Cheltenham. Briarfields is open all year round and is dog-friendly.

What customers say

Briarfields is a tidy, adults-only spot with modern ablutions, especially good showers. It's handy for Cheltenham & Gloucester by bus, with shops nearby. Pitches are roomy and private thanks to hedges. Some mention road/air noise, but most find the convenience and quality win out.

Camping pod (double)

Liked The glamping pod was so comfortable and had everything (and more!) I needed. Loved the private outside space too. My dog also enjoyed the dog walking field.

I felt very safe as a female solo traveller and would highly recommend to others!

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked This site was chosen as it is Adults only, on a bus route and also fairly close to home (45 mins away).

When we arrived we were advised they were moving us to a different pitch than they had planned, as we wouldn’t need levelling ramps, and probably due to our small size. The staff were lovely and friendly.

The pitch was perfect, nice and private with shelter from the sun by the trees, with water, waste and electric.

The facilities were lovely and clean and modern - the piped music was a nice touch! We also liked the wicker figures around the site and the fairy lights at night.

We were right under the flight path for the local airport, so that combined my two hobbies - camping and planes - perfect! We took a walk to the airport and had a drink at the Aviator Inn, and watched the planes coming and going. (Be warned, the walk is along a fairly busy and fast road that doesn’t have a footpath).

There was some road noise but that doesn’t bother us as we live by the M5.

Local transport was efficient to get to both Gloucester and Cheltenham and further afield.

Would definitely recommend.

Disliked Nothing!

From the manager: Thank you so much for your fantastic and wonderfully detailed review, Tracey.

We're delighted you chose Briarfields for your break and that our adults-only setting, location and excellent bus links ticked all the boxes for you.

It's lovely to hear the pitch change worked out so well too. We always try to allocate the most suitable pitch we can, and it sounds as though yours was just right, with plenty of privacy and some very welcome shade from the sunshine!

We're so pleased you enjoyed our clean, modern facilities and the piped music! It's also lovely that you noticed the wicker sculptures and fairy lights around the park. They're some of those little touches we hope help make Briarfields feel a bit special.

We had to smile at your comments about the aircraft. Being close to Gloucestershire Airport isn't everyone's cup of tea, so finding a guest who can combine two hobbies – camping and plane spotting – is absolutely perfect! It sounds as though your visit to the Aviator Inn rounded things off nicely too. Ooh re the walk to the Aviator there is an off road route across the fields then onto a footpath for the last stretch. The other safe route is turn left out of the park and follow the B4063 and turn left at the set of lights and continue along the footpath and you'll see the Aviator on your right hand side. Maps can be found on our noticeboards.

We're also pleased you made good use of the buses to Cheltenham and Gloucester. Having such regular public transport right outside the park is a real bonus for guests who want to leave the car or motorhome behind and explore.

Thank you again for your recommendation and, best of all, for having nothing to dislike! We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and hope that, being only 45 minutes away, we'll be seeing you back at Briarfields before too long.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your review, Robert.

We're delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay and appreciated how clean and tidy you found the park. It's also great to know you made the most of the excellent bus links to both Cheltenham and Gloucester.

We're very sorry to hear you experienced issues with the Wi-Fi. This certainly isn't the experience we want our guests to have. Our Wi-Fi system was completely upgraded at the end of last season and is generally very reliable, so it sounds as though there may have been a fault affecting your stay. Had we known at the time, we would have been more than happy to investigate and, in many cases, resolve the issue straight away.

Thank you for bringing it to our attention through your review. We really do value all feedback, as it helps us continue to improve. We hope this isolated issue won't deter you from visiting us again, and we'd love the opportunity to provide you with a five-star experience next time.

Best Wishes,
The Briarfields Team

Camping pod (twin)

Liked This was my first time staying in one of the pods, and I absolutely loved it! It was a birthday gift to myself, and it was money very well spent.

The pod was cosy and comfortable, and I really enjoyed the peaceful walking routes around the park, as well as the easy stroll to the nearby retail park. It was the perfect place to relax and unwind.

I remembered Briarfields being really well kept from previous visits, and I'm happy to say the standards haven't dropped at all. I'll definitely be returning whenever life gets a bit hectic and I need to de-stress or simply treat myself again. Highly recommended!

Michael on reception a very warm, friendly chap.

Disliked Not being able to park car next to pod.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your wonderful review, Elizabeth.

We're absolutely delighted that you chose to celebrate your birthday with us, what a lovely gift to yourself! It means so much to hear that your first stay in one of our glamping pods was such a success and that you found it cosy, comfortable and the perfect place to relax and unwind.

It's especially lovely to know that Briarfields lived up to your memories from previous visits and that you feel our standards are as high as ever. We work incredibly hard to keep the park looking its best, so your kind comments are truly appreciated.

Thank you also for your lovely words about Michael. We'll be sure to pass them on, he'll be delighted to know his warm welcome helped make your stay even more enjoyable.

We appreciate your feedback about parking next to the pod. Unfortunately, the layout of the pod area doesn't allow for parking immediately beside them, but we're grateful you mentioned it and will always consider guest feedback as we continue to improve the park.

Thank you again for your recommendation and for sharing your birthday getaway with us. We look forward to welcoming you back whenever you need another chance to relax, recharge and treat yourself!

Local attractions

Well. Where do we start? At least a day in Cheltenham first, we think – more if you’re coming to have a flutter at the racecourse just four miles away or jazzing it up at one of the many festivals. Catch the bus early to take in as much as poss: a morning coveting the art, furniture, crafts and jewellery at Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, many created by Cotswold craftspeople inspired by William Morris, should build up an appetite for lunch and an afternoon of shopping around The Brewery, Bath Road and in the well-lined High Street. Harry Potter fans and the history-inclined will likely want an hour or two at medieval Gloucester Cathedral, used in the first and second films (see if you recognise the Cloisters). Away from Hogwarts, the cathedral has an award-winning exhibition centre, exhibitions and guided tours, and regular events and concerts including The Three Choirs Festival, one of the oldest classical choral music festivals in the world. The Gloucester Docks and award-winning Waterways Museum is also a good afternoon out for heritage fans, while the more modern can find plenty to occupy them at the waterside retail park Gloucester Quays. Plunge into the countryside next for a couple of days in the Cotswolds, where you’ll find acres of things to do whatever your inclination such as punting around local villages like Chipping Camden and Bourton-on-the-Water, or visiting the many museums ranging from Roman to motoring times. Wildlife options abound too, particularly for birders, with the Cotswold Falconry Centre at the Batsford Arboretum, geese and swans at Slimbridge Wetland Centre, and Birdland Park and Gardens in Bourton-on-the-Water where twitchers can see rare birds from around the world, including England’s only group of king penguins. Finally, take a day or two in the ancient Forest of Dean (Harry Potter and co ended up here too), one of the oldest woodlands in the country, to go underground at the old mines of the Clearwell Caves, hire a bike to hit the forest tracks, or, more relaxingly, take the four and a half mile trip from Lydney to Parkend on the Dean Forest Railway.
