Ever feel the urge to step off the 21st-century treadmill? Spend a bit of time just quietly contemplating nature, life and, well, everything? Set off alone, bring your partner for some couple time or gather friends and family for a peaceful stay at North Country Christian Campground.
There’s plenty of serene space to breathe fresh air and sit quietly among the trees at this woodland campground, spread over an acre of rural Washington half an hour’s drive from Oroville. As one might imagine of such a setting, it’s something of a wildlife haven here, and a fine base for such activities as hiking, fishing and boating.
Campfire gatherings and barbecue dinners are essential parts of such a wilderness stay, of course, and both are permitted at this park; there’s also a welcome extended to any dogs that want to come along to join in the long rural walks (and perhaps help with any leftover sausages from the grill…). A games room and play area have been set up at the park for smaller guests who might need a bit more activity in their lives.
Fittingly for such a rural campground, there’s a back to nature vibe with the bathroom setup: a composting toilet is available, but please note that there are no shower facilities. And although you may have shut it out for a while, this is still the modern world – so there’s free wifi throughout for when you need it.

Local attractions
Woods, mountains, lakes – take your pick for scenic hiking trails. Mary Ann Lake, a few minutes’ walk away, is a good place to start, with Buckhorn Mountain half an hour away by car for folk who require more of an uphill challenge.
Bring along fishing kit for outings to Beaver Lake and Beth Lake (both 20 minutes’ drive) or Lost Lake (half an hour) – with luck, you’ll come back with plenty of trout and other critters for the evening’s dinner. Those adept at fishing small pockets of water can try out Mary Ann Lake too.
Boat launches can be had at the bigger lakes, and all are fine outings for a hike too. For a slightly spooky place to take a walk, head to the ghost town of Bodie (half an hour), abandoned in the late 19th century and now preserved as a relic of that era.
