- Comfy and compact 2021 Airstream caravan on a 5.2-acre estate
- Five miles from Battle Ground town centre; 40 mins' drive to Portland
- Kitchenette, heating, shower room and blackout shades provided
Out into the woods for a peaceful and secluded stay that also just happens to have all sorts of comforts provided too – that’s the fabulous mix that’s on offer at The Shire, a 5.2-acre location in rural Washington, just under 10 minutes’ drive from Battle Ground town centre.
One of the major draws here is that you’ll have all of that space pretty much to yourselves, as there’s just the one rental RV available for guests to stay in. The fabulous classic 2021 Airstream Basecamp caravan (going by the name of TinTin) has been parked in its own private area a little way from the estate’s house.
From here you can take strolls through the woodland within the grounds, throw a few hoops on the basketball half court or simply chill out hanging in a hammock or on the swings. Venturing out means easy access to more activities nearby too – perhaps mountain biking through Gifford Pinchot National Forest, poking about in the vintage shops in town or spending a day fishing/swimming/kayaking at Battle Ground Lake.
If you’re in the market for a slightly more upmarket camping experience, this could be the place for you (worth noting that’s the vibe here – it’s not set up to be a tiny home). TinTin’s dimensions make it best suited to one or two adult guests, but there is space for a child to sleep on the converted bed in the dinette area.
The interior is compact but well designed, including a kitchenette, shower room and comfy queen size bed as well as extra touches like heating, a coffee maker, a fridge and blackout shades to help you get a good night’s sleep.

Local attractions
This location is a particularly fine one for travellers who’d like to experience the outdoors but also want easy access to town amenities – it will take you less than 10 minutes to drive to the centre of Battle Ground for indie shops, restaurants, a farm store and a microbrewery.
And then, perhaps out into the wilds? Battle Ground Lake State Park is five minutes’ drive away for hiking trails or boating and fishing at the deep volcanic lake. More of that? Try Lucia Falls Regional Park (15 minutes’ drive) or Daybreak Regional Park and Boat Launch (20 minutes). And this rural area also accommodates several wineries within a 20-minute drive too.
There are some great 4x4 trails to drive in the surrounding area – both the Skyline Trailhead and Mountain View Trailhead are within a 40-minute drive. Or how about experiencing something completely different by taking the 40-minute drive to Portland for garden walks, museum visits and generally ‘keeping it weird’…
