- Five minutes' drive from Laytonville; 40 minutes to the Pacific coast
- Reservoir, creek, forests and lake beach; watersports available
Planning a getaway in the Golden State? Escape to the wonderful world of Mendocino Magic, a vast 600-acre property where you're free to explore shimmering lakes, winding creeks and lush forests at your leisure.
Once a logging camp, then a commercial fishing facility, Mendocino Magic is now a well-preserved natural environment that's great for a range of camping trips, whether you want to go back to basics or find some slightly more fancy outdoor accommodation. Located inland near the small town of Laytonville and roughly 40 minutes' drive from the Pacific coast, the property has a very laidback atmosphere, making it an excellent choice for those seeking seclusion as well as guests who are keen to connect with fellow travelers the old-fashioned way.
Adults-only and family-friendly campgrounds are available, depending on who you'd rather mix with, and there are plenty of more secluded spaces if you’d rather spend some time alone.
There's a good range of amenities here, including a spacious central shared kitchen with a large propane grill and smaller charcoal grills, plus plenty of seating space. Down at the reservoir, there's also scope for watersports, with kayaks and floatables available to hire, as well as swimming and catch-and-release fishing.

Local attractions
Mendocino Magic is about 10 minutes' drive from Admiral Standley State Recreation Area, a large hiking area with 45 acres of native Californian redwoods deep in Mendocino County. For further exploration, you might like to head a little further afield to see the flora and fauna at the Angelo Coast Range Reserve, where Douglas firs, Olympic salamanders, black bears and flying squirrels can all be seen.
The nearest beaches are in DeHaven (roughly 40 minutes away by road), home to spacious stretches of sand and lots of opportunities to go out surfing or sailing. Driving up and down the scenic Shoreline Highway is an excellent way to spend the day if you want to see more of the ocean, with highlights including the historic town of Fort Bragg (approximately an hour and 10 minutes).
For another impressive drive, head north to Humboldt Redwoods State Park (an hour and 20 minutes), home to the far-famed Avenue of Giants and some of the tallest and oldest redwoods in the state.
