Once you’ve wandered around the park, it’s time to look a bit further afield – there are hiking trails all around here, ranging from gentle strolls to scrambling up mountains (Mount Shasta is around an hour away for folk planning serious climbing action). If you’re more interested in getting down mountains at speed, it’s a 45-minute drive to Mount Ashland ski area. It’s worth taking an amble around a couple of the local towns, too. Head to Ashland (40 minutes) for shops, wineries and a dose of culture at the Shakespeare festival that runs from spring through to the fall, and to the Gold Rush town of Yreka (25 minutes), where there’s a fine museum and some vintage-style shops. Also on your list of hikes might be a trip to the stunning Living Memorial Sculpture Garden (50 minutes), dedicated to the country’s war veterans, diving underground to see Pluto’s cave (55 minutes) or one that takes in Lake Siskiyou and the Faery Falls (just over an hour from the park).
