  • Peaceful 20-acre park 10 minutes' drive from Hornbrook
  • A 45-minute drive from Mount Ashland skiing; an hour from Mount Shasta
  • Long Klamath River frontage for fishing, boating and wildlife spotting
What better downtime activity could there be than idling by a river, watching the water drift downstream...? If that sounds like a most appealing way to spend an hour or few, you’ll be most pleased with Klamath Ranch Resort - Blue Heron RV Park’s setting – the Klamath River runs right along the southern edge of this luxury California park 10 minutes’ drive from Hornbrook. The folk here have made such activities easy by scattering lots of lawn chairs and picnic tables around the 20-acre park, so guests can seek out their own spot from which to watch the ospreys, herons and other birds that call this place home. If getting comfy requires a bit of shade, head for the large riverside covered area, where there’s a corn toss game to try your hand at, plus a couple of barbecues where you can whip up some eats. And if you have other plans for your riverside break? They’re easily sorted too: fishing types should certainly bring their kit along, as legend has it that three of the area’s finest fishing holes are just behind the park (secrets the team will let you in on once you’ve arrived…). The park has a boat ramp for those planning rafting, kayaking or drifting along in small boats, along with a shuttle service to retrieve you (for a reasonable fee). Attention to detail is big at this park: the wifi runs off several systems to get it out to all corners, there’s a collection of books to browse while you do your laundry, and the swish modern bathroom block has smart granite counters and accessible toilets and showers.

Local attractions

Once you’ve wandered around the park, it’s time to look a bit further afield – there are hiking trails all around here, ranging from gentle strolls to scrambling up mountains (Mount Shasta is around an hour away for folk planning serious climbing action). If you’re more interested in getting down mountains at speed, it’s a 45-minute drive to Mount Ashland ski area. It’s worth taking an amble around a couple of the local towns, too. Head to Ashland (40 minutes) for shops, wineries and a dose of culture at the Shakespeare festival that runs from spring through to the autumn, and to the Gold Rush town of Yreka (25 minutes), where there’s a fine museum and some vintage-style shops. Also on your list of hikes might be a trip to the stunning Living Memorial Sculpture Garden (50 minutes), dedicated to the country’s war veterans, diving underground to see Pluto’s cave (55 minutes) or one that takes in Lake Siskiyou and the Faery Falls (just over an hour from the park).
