Deep Creek Hot Springs Campground: Flowers around site

General

  • 160-acre rural campground near Deep Creek Hot Springs
  • Less than two hours' drive from Los Angeles and Palm Springs
  • Dog-friendly campground with picnic tables and fire rings provided

If you want to camp out as close as possible to the Deep Creek Hot Springs, then Deep Creek Hot Springs Campground is the place to do it… In the Juniper Flats area of Southern California, where the San Bernardino Mountains meet the Mojave Desert, the 160-acre homestead property is 35 minutes’ drive outside of Hesperia.

The lithium hot spring pools naturally carved out of the canyon’s cliff rocks sit alongside a cool flowing creek less than two miles from the site. People have been making camp here for nearly a century so they can take a hike before soaking in the hot springs – stay overnight and you can be first to take a dip when access to the canyon opens at sunrise.

Once you've taken in the spectacular views of mountain and desert landscapes all around, head out to explore the many miles of trails criss-crossing thousands of acres of wildlife-rich land. It's all been managed to maintain the unique mix of plants and animals including the iconic Joshua trees, red-tailed hawks, golden eagles, coyotes and mountain lions.

Sitting 4500 ft up in the mountains of the Mojave Desert, 13 miles from the nearest town and convenience stores, this is a place to escape the everyday. There’s cell phone service on the property, but it drops out along most of the six-mile dirt road that leads here, so check directions before you set off.

Essential facilities available on site include bathrooms, showers, potable water and wifi. Dogs are welcome and there are picnic tables and barbecue/fire rings to use when you’re back at base after a hard day’s exploring.

Please note

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

Minimum spacing of 300 metres between pitches.

Desert camping done right08/03/2021

This place was great. It was the exact type of off the beaten path isolated adventure my friends and I were looking for. We showed up and were consistently surprised by all of the the little extras we discovered on the campsite - There were flushing toilets, outdoor showers, a cold tub on a hilltop and a grill and fire-pit. Most of these weren't even listed as amenities on the website we used. The people running it were super friendly and as kind as could be. Go here, build a fire, and let your toes feel some earth between them.

    Disliked:

It would have actually been nice to know there was a grill and other small touches. That way we wouldn't have bought all those things at the supermarket.

From the manager...

Thank you for the kind words & compliments. I will work on getting the details added to make planning and camping easier for the guest! The more you know...

Well distanced, clean campsite for adults.06/07/2021

The site was great, not overpacked and the sites were well distanced from each other. The showers felt amazing after a hot day in the desert. The management was very helpful and understanding if issues arose and we incredibly kind. We can't wait to stay here again!

The trek in is on a dirt road, with a lot of bumps. I'd recommend driving in an SUV/Truck with very good suspension.

    Disliked:

Only one drop toilet for the site and for visitors.

From the manager...

Thank you Jenna!
The drive up can be a bit bumpy when the county hasn’t graded it in a while, but any 2 wheel drive vehicle will make it to the campground, unless it just snowed! You will be pleased to know we have 2 flushing toilets now and a dry composting pit toilet in the glamping tents area, and 1 flushing toilet and 2 dry composting pit toilets in the general tent camping area by the trailhead. Come back and check out the spring on our property next time!

Close to hiking trail. Large campsites with turf pad for tent, picnic tables, fire ring.

    Disliked:

There was a large party with children even though children are not supposed to be allowed here. The party went until 2am with full blast music, then back up again at 7am with full blast music. We did not sleep for two nights and left a night early as it was a horrible experience. The management did not enforce no children, they did not enforce 10pm quiet time. They let this party get out of control and ruin it for all other campers. I will not be returning.

From the manager...

On occasions such as this, large groups will show up unannounced for a celebration, not prearranged with us. This was a fairly large group of Hispanics having a family reunion event, and had we known how lively they were going to be, we would have put them on the far side of the campground where there is a natural noise barrier and is secluded for such events. After hearing about you and your partner being disturbed by Mexican music all night, I immediately spoke with the group about it, to which they immediately complied in exchange for being able to return and camp on our property again, and that night was much quieter with no complaints. The majority of people enjoy the atmosphere created on our property, but it is the luck of the draw who will be staying at the campground at the same time as you... and sometimes groups clash. Know that we do our best to make it an enjoyable experience for everyone and do not promote enjoyment at other people’s expense. Many times we have to go with the flow and I apologize we did not meet your expectations on this visit. I encourage you to come stay again, because most likely you will have a far different experience. May I suggest you request a site on our secluded side and then you can feel confident you will not be encroached upon. Cheers!

Took my bestie camping there for a day and half …04/18/2021

Took my bestie camping there for a day and half stress reliever. (Two elderly gals who love hiking) The Plan to rent a Geo Dome “The Desert Fox”. Hike down to deep creek and back. Cook a great meal. Have a camp fire with a glass of wine and call it a day.
I didn’t know what to expect as I have never rented a Geo Dome before. But was pleasantly surprised when upon arriving when we got a tour of the area from Matt. Who was friendly informative and assured us if there was anything we need to call him and he would take care of it.
We unpacked our car. Put on our day packs and went hiking down to deep creek. The hike was strenuously invigorating, which we both needed. Spent a couple of hours at the bottom and hiked back up to our car and then drove over to our Geo Dome.
The area is beautiful. 160 acres of roaming! The 360 views are spectacular, the sunset/sunrise and star full night skies are mesmerizing. It was a perfect day, just what my friend and I needed.
Matt was extremely helpful. We had a problem with the Coleman gas stove and he brought us his propane stove to use during our stay. We slept on an air Mattress that was provided. There were 2 camp chairs, 2 long 6’ tables, couple of night stands, camping cook stove, a few cooking utensils (the basics) a wok frying pan, dish washing stuff, couple of stackable shelves. The floor was plastic planks which helped keep the sand out some what. All and all we had a great time.

    Disliked:

No dislikes but a few suggestions: When sleeping on an air mattress in the desert where the temperatures dip down into the 30’s. Its important to have a bearer between the air mattress and the body as the cold air will zap your warmth quickly. So my experience as a long time camper and who sleeps on an air mattress when car camping is to put a moving blanket (the thick ones moving companies use) on the air mattress, then your bedding. Which results in a toasty sleep. We both (who are experienced backpackers in all weather) were cold through the night, even tho I had my backpacking 20 degree quilt. Lesson learned for the future. Also I would recommend a few more solar lights as the dome is pretty dark in the evening.

Local attractions

If such a big expanse of desert trails gets you itching to jump on a dirt bike, there are designated routes to keep you happy all day long. If you prefer taking in the views at a slower pace, search the horseback riding options that can be arranged from Hesperia (35 minutes’ drive) or at ranches nearby.

When it’s time to give your hiking boots a break, the California Route 66 Museum in Victorville (40 minutes) is a good pitstop for finding out all about the US’s most famous highway. Or hang out high above the canyons at ziplining centers in the San Gabriel Mountains (an hour and 10 minutes) or Skyforest (an hour and 15 minutes).

Animal enthusiasts keen to get up close and personal with the wildlife can take the 50-minute trip to Wolf Mountain Sanctuary in Lucerne Valley or visit Wildhaven Ranch, near Lake Arrowhead (an hour and a half) where you’ll need to pre-book onto one of their tours to be guided round this rehabilitation sanctuary for bears, birds and other indigenous beasts.
