It's free, quick and easy!
- Small, simple site on a family-run winery in the Willcox area
- Chiricahua National Monument and Fort Bowie within 45 minutes' drive
- Tours and tastings on site; several more wineries a short walk away
What’s the best way to explore an up-and-coming wine region? Staying over at a winery, of course – and that’s exactly what you can do at Birds and Barrels Vineyard, where sites are set up among 50 acres of vines about 15 miles outside of Willcox.
This is one of Arizona’s three main wine-producing areas, and you’ll be right in the middle of the action at this small family-run winery. Tours and tastings take place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (or other days by appointment), but you can also soak up a lot of the atmosphere of the place just by having a stroll around to see what’s going on.
Bottles are available to buy, too – and surely there are few vacation experiences as fine as sipping a glass of wine while watching the sun set over the vines that produced the grapes. As well as being productive on the grape-growing front, this area is very scenic and often has spectacular sunsets and sunrises, along with dark skies for stargazing.
There are plenty of other wineries to visit nearby if you’d like to sample several of the area’s products – but it’s not all about the grapes. This is also a great area for hikes around the likes of Chiricahua National Monument and Fort Bowie National Historic Site, with cooler temperatures than you tend to find in Phoenix.
This is a simple and peaceful campground that aims to have minimal interference with the natural world, so please note that there are no toilet or shower facilities.

Local attractions
The surrounding area is very well supplied with places to try a glass of wine: there are six or seven wineries within walking distance, and several more within a few minutes’ drive.
Hiking is a great way to build up some thirst for those drinks, and there’s plenty of it around: trails run around the cliffs and unusual rock formations at Chiricahua National Monument, or you could take a walk among the historic ruins at Fort Bowie National Historic Site. Both are about 45 minutes’ drive away. The area around Cochise Stronghold and Council Rocks (40 minutes’ drive) is another good place to go for an outing.
For more of an insight into the area’s history, head to Bisbee (an hour and 15 minutes) to visit the museums and take a tour of the miners’ underground tunnels, or plan trips to other small local towns including Pearce-Sunsites (25 minutes), St David (an hour) and Sierra Vista (an hour and 25 minutes). If you fancy a bite of a bigger city, it’s about an hour and a half’s drive to Tucson.
