  • Campground in a dramatic Arizona canyon 40 minutes’ drive from Globe
  • Access to hiking paths, rockhounding and Chrysotile mining ghost town
  • Spacious, leafy and secluded sites spread across the 420-acre property
Looking for somewhere remote and unusual to lay your head? You’ve got it in one with a stay at Ash Creek Canyon, 420 acres of private land 40 minutes’ drive from historic Globe in Arizona. The campground is tucked deep into a rugged canyon in the Tonto National Forest, home to the long-forgotten mining town of Chrysotile set amid dramatic scenery. The canyon was closed after the town was abandoned in 1945, but now visitors can experience this remarkable piece of Arizona history for themselves. Sites are set close to the canyon walls and sheltered by mature trees, near Ash Creek or surrounded by desert vegetation. There are well-kept hiking trails across the property, and you can go rockhounding in the creek, explore the relics of Chrysotile ghost town, discover waterfalls and keep your eyes open for wildlife including bears, deer and birds of prey. Because Ash Creek Canyon is in a remote, rural area, you won’t find restaurants, shops or busy tourist attractions close by. What you will find is peace and quiet, however, especially after dark when everything becomes still, and – thanks to the lack of light pollution – you can sit around the campfire and watch the Milky Way shapeshifting in the sky.

Local attractions

Chances are you may never leave the canyon, as there are so many ways to explore the property and dramatic surrounding landscapes. Buy a Day Pass to spend your time hiking along Ash Creek to towering waterfalls – you can take a dip in the swimming holes when conditions allow. Subject to availability and rental requirements, you can hire six-seater off-road vehicles from the campground owners to explore the canyon on your own. You can also take guided off-road tours through the gorge, leading through the remains of Chrysotile and along backcountry roads to scenic canyon-top viewpoints. Book an Underground Mine Exploration Tour to see historic rail tracks, mining equipment and veins of chrysotile ore inside the abandoned mine. If you’d like to learn about more local history, make for Globe (40 minutes’ drive) and the Besh-Ba-Gowah Museum, on the site of an ancient pueblo built by the Salado people and displaying prehistoric pottery, stone tools and textiles. There’s also a couple of Mexican restaurants and supermarkets nearby.
