Local attractions

The campground is conveniently located for many activities and attractions including the famous mines. If you wish to go to gold mines or to even prospect for gold there are 3 that are handy: the Crow Creek Mine which is located in Girdwood, the Petersville Mine is in Petersville near Trapper Creek or the Independence Mine which is up in Hatchers Pass. In Hatchers Pass, besides the beautiful view (the view alone is worth the trip) there are horseback rides with Alaska Riding Adventures, a petting zoo and ATV rentals. If you want to spot other animals, you could go to the Reindeer Farm in Palmer, which is about 15 miles from the campground, or to the Muskox Farm which gives tours and has an interpretive museum, gift shop, and picnic area. Palmer also has an open-air market every Friday from May to August. For the real adventurer, there is the Alaska Toy Rentals and Outfitting – they rent all kinds of play toys for big boys and give guided tours. For a little calmer type of activities about 10 miles away is the Happy Trails Kennels of Martin Buser. They give kennel tours, demonstrate the fine art of mushing sled dogs, and you get to meet and pet the puppies! About 7 miles from the park in the other direction you will find the Iditarod Museum and Headquarters. A few miles beyond them is the Knik Museum. Alternatively, you can turn around and go into the heart of Wasilla where you can visit the Dorothy Page Museum. Only 1 mile from the campground is the Transportation Museum which also gives rides on a miniature train on weekends throughout the summer months. For the avid fisherman, we are 7 miles from the Little Su River where you can cast your line out and fish for Kings or Silvers depending on which variety are running at the time. And there are 3 different golf courses locally - one in Palmer, one in Settlers Bay (on Knik Goose Bay Rd) and Sleepy Hollow in Wasilla for those of you who golf.
