- Laidback Alaskan campground on the spectacular Kenai Peninsula
- A 10-minute drive from Happy Valley Falls; Homer 40 minutes
- Quiet campground with organised deep-sea halibut and salmon fishing
Buckle up – it's time for a road trip round Alaska's spectacular Kenai Peninsula. And how about a few days of deep-sea fishing with that?
Reel Em Inn is a laidback, fishing-focused campground in this especially scenic part of the northernmost State. Whether you're looking to land a jumbo-sized catch (no really, look at the pictures – the fish here can get huge) or simply chill in the Ninilchik area, this spot has plenty of possibilities for scenic and satisfying outdoor stays.
The campground is spacious and can accommodate larger vehicles, with a covered barbecue and fire ring area where guests can warm themselves when the weather gets chilly. Restrooms, showers and laundry facilities are also on hand to help keep you and your clothes in check. A niche but handy thing to have here is the Reel Em Inn walk-in freezer, where those staying for longer spells can store fish they've caught for later use.
The small scale of the campground definitely gives things a friendly feel here, something which is also true of the town. Community amenities within a five-minute drive include a café, a Thai takeaway and a bar. There are spectacular mountain views all around as well, plus nearby natural sites like Happy Valley Falls and Deep Creek State Recreation Area within a 10-minute drive. Razor clams can also be collected on a local beach at low tide.

Local attractions
Brought your sea legs? Reel Em Inn's fishing charters are a must for angling fans, with halibut, salmon and razor clams all on offer depending on the time of year. Once you've landed your catch, the crew is also on hand to assist with all freezing, cutting and packaging (including vacuum packing and sealing in airline-approved insulated containers for those that want to take a tasty momento home with them).
Once you've had enough of salty high-seas times there are plenty of local beauty spots like the aptly-named Happy Valley Falls (10 minutes' drive). Itching to explore beyond the main road? Excellent off-road tours can be sorted with Adventure Alaska Car Rentals (45 minutes); those who prefer a smoother ride may prefer a seaplane jaunt with Talon Air Services (50 minutes).
Heading south, you'll soon reach Homer (40 minutes), a neat little town overlooking Kachemak Bay. Here, there's a miles-long harbour spit – the departure point for several birdwatching and sightseeing boat trips – plus the Pratt Museum, a brewery and a spa.
