Bankersmith Campground and RV Park

- Texas campground with hilltop views, water features and tall grass
- A 20-minute drive outside of Fredericksburg; an hour to Horseshoe Bay
- Direct access to hiking trails; a short walk from a historic saloon
You could say that Bankersmith Campground and RV Park is one of the dandiest spots to stop in the Lone Star State. Why? The scenic location and handsome hilltop views certainly do a lot for the place, as does the park's direct access to hiking trails. And there's also the fact that there's a whole lot of restorative peace and quiet in Bankersmith, Texas (population: zero).
Don't take that to mean that this place has been left to the tumbleweed, though – the campground is directly opposite historic Bankersmith Dance Hall and Saloon, a lively spot that hosts frequent weekend concerts, festivals and other opportunities to kick back with a cold drink. A free tour of the town farm can be had on most days, where you can feed slops to the hogs or try your hand at goat milking.
Back at base, the 85-acre campground is dotted with oaks that stand tall above the long, dry grass; there are also plenty of picnic patches to take advantage of. The back to basics philosophy behind Bankersmith Campground and RV Park means you'll need to either bring your own bathroom or use the facilities and water taps across the street (when open).
When hunger hits, you'll have the choice between self-catered eats and Bankersmith’s very own food truck, where you can buy burgers, chicken wings, pulled pork sandwiches and other meaty treats. For proper sit-down meals, take a turn around Fredericksburg (20 minutes' drive).

Local attractions
Up for a glass of wine? Sauvignon blanc, malbec and shiraz varieties are all on the to-drink list at Safari Winery (10 minutes' drive), a family-run estate with six generations of juicy grape know-how to its name. Other local food and drink attractions include the several sausage and sauerkraut joints in downtown Fredericksburg (20 minutes), the legacy of the Texas Germans that settled here in the mid-19th century.
You'll also have numerous options for hikes and drives through spectacular scenery: top of the list are Enchanted Rock (40 minutes), a great geology spot with eight miles of trails, and Pedernales Falls State Park (an hour), a set of rivers and cascades that run over gorgeous limestone terrain. For an award-winning golf and spa resort, meanwhile, head for the lakeside town of Horseshoe Bay (an hour).
If American history strikes a chord, soak up some of the informative displays at the National Museum of the Pacific War (20 minutes), Pioneer Museum (20 minutes) or Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park (30 minutes).
