Planning a weekend getaway close to the city? A night of stargazing with family and friends? Or just want a place to base yourself while you work remotely for a couple weeks? Whatever you’re up to, make your way to the eight-acre Moonlight Lake RV Park for stays a 15-minute drive from North Carolina’s New Bern.
‘A hidden gem’ is what this campground calls itself, and that description is very much on the money. Family-owned and operated, the park prides itself on being welcoming and having well-kept facilities, including an indoor pool, hot tub, games room, fitness centre and bathhouse. The outdoor amenities are also a notch or two above the usual – avid anglers have access to a catch-and-release fishing pond, pet owners can wander around the dog park, and there’s a playground for the kids.
The location is also worth writing home about. Close to the riverfront city of New Bern, the park is less than an hour’s drive from Atlantic Beach. Got a boat and keen to venture out on the water? You can seek out a few ramps to launch from under 10 miles away.
Other benefits of this park include its wholesome vibes. It has a friendly atmosphere and is far enough from the city to feel chilled out, but close enough to access New Bern’s farmers’ market, international restaurants and fudge shop without much hassle.

Local attractions
Don’t miss trips to New Bern when at this park. The riverfront city is home to the Tryon Palace complex, with its replica of North Carolina's first capitol, and is also known for the drugstore where Pepsi is said to have been invented in the late 1800s.
There’s plenty more entertainment to choose from in the city as well, from a fireman’s museum and escape room to a miniature golf course and art gallery.
The surrounding nature is also unmissable. Set off to Union Point Park for wanders along the boardwalk flanking the river (15 minutes) or go further south to the Croatan National Forest (45 minutes) and explore the 160,000 acres’ worth of pine forests, saltwater estuaries and ‘pocosins’ (raised swamps).
Keep an eye out for wildlife while you’re canoeing and fishing here – you might just spot black bears and alligators, along with wild turkeys and ospreys.
