- Peaceful riverside park near Mayo with 'old Florida' atmosphere
- Well placed for walks or diving at the area's natural springs
- Canoe trips, fishing, freshwater swims and 'chicken poo bingo' on site
Keen to sample a slice of ‘old Florida’? That’s the experience promised by Frank and team at Suwannee River Rendezvous, in a gorgeous green location next to the river, about 10 minutes’ drive from Mayo.
So what’s ‘old Florida’ all about? Well, it’s a simpler branch of tourism, focused on traditional activities and appreciating nature rather than the busy theme parks that the state has become known for. Frank Page bought this place in 2008 and since then has been expanding and improving it to create a laidback and friendly place to stay at spacious and attractive campsites.
The river is the big feature here, of course, and you’ll be able to explore it by joining kayak or canoe trips from the park, or using the shuttle service if you have your own kit. There are also places where you can just sit by the water’s edge for a peaceful afternoon just soaking up the atmosphere. Fancy a dip? Head to the site's Convict Spring, for a cool swim among the fish and turtles, then relax at the waterside dining deck.
You can’t fish at the spring, but you can at the catch-and-release pond (which doesn't require a Florida fishing license). Other facilities on site include a playground for the kids and a dog park with five sections where dogs of all sizes can have a good run around. The Cookin’ Shack is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from Friday to Sunday, and guests have access to wifi, a laundry room and restrooms including accessible facilities.
Entertainment? You got it – and it’s bound to be memorable, with pigeon races and ‘chicken poo bingo’ staples of the schedule.
