  • RV sites at a six-acre Vermont property around a historic home
  • In the Green Mountain National Forest, 15 mins' drive from Middlebury
  • Easy access via main roads; direct access to hiking and ski trails
Venture out to this rural Vermont property and you may well feel like you’ve stepped back in time a bit… Chipman Inn or Out is a six-acre property centred around a fabulously well-preserved 200-year-old home that’s now set up as a guest house. This is a peaceful rural location (the three acres of maple trees are particularly lovely…), but the good news for RV drivers is that it’s also very simple to access. You simply need to pull in from Vermont Route 125, which you can pick up from Route 7 (10 minutes’ drive away). Once you’re in, you’ll park up at a serviced site with electric hookup and access to shared facilities including a fast wifi service, restrooms and showers. Breakfast is available to add to your booking, or you can simply kick off your morning by stopping by at the inn for a hot cup of coffee and a chat. A country store is just across the road for all your drinks, meal ingredients and picnic supplies, and there are more shops and places to eat in Middlebury (15 minutes’ drive). Town and country can both be on your schedule when you’re staying here – you may like to meander around the buzzy college town of Middlebury, visit the Breadloaf Campus (a favourite of poet Robert Frost) or take advantage of the location close to the Green Mountain National Forest. Hiking, bike rides and skiing are all popular activities in this area, and there’s a handy free shuttle bus that can get you out to (and back from) some of the choice locations.

Local attractions

This area is known as Robert Frost country, and there are several sites where you can find out more about the famed poet and his life in the area. Start with a walk on the Robert Frost Interpretive Trail (two miles to the trailhead), then stop by at Robert Frost House, where he spent 39 summers. There are lots of other walking trails in the surrounding Green Mountain National Forest, including the Skylight Pond Trail (10 minutes’ drive) and Silver Lake Trail (15 minutes). In winter, you can get directly out onto 30 miles of cross-country ski trails from the inn or Rikert Outdoor Center (five minutes), or take to the slopes at Middlebury College Snow Bowl (10 minutes). Middlebury (15 minutes) is worth a visit to see the Henry Sheldon Museum and nearby Morgan Horse Farm as well as visiting the attractive Middlebury College. Also nearby are the excellent Shelburne Museum (50 minutes), home to a great collection of American folk art and artefacts like a historic lake steamship, and Fort Ticonderoga (an hour), a key site in the American War of Independence.
