It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-oriented Catskills campground 15 minutes' drive from Hancock
- On the banks of Hathaway Pond for swimming, fishing and hikes
- Free use of rowing boats and kayaks, and nature or craft activities
To the Catskills, and a chilled-out place to contemplate life, the universe and everything – Kingswood Campsite is a rural retreat on the banks of Hathaway Pond, 15 minutes’ drive from Hancock, New York, with stunning views over the surrounding hills, forests and fields.
Fill your days with active pursuits if you wish: around the whopping 766-acre natural site are lakeside trails, forest walks, a sports area, a playground, a supervised lake swimming area and kayaks or rowing boats to borrow. A crafts area caters for folk taken with creative spirit, and there’s an activity programme through the summer, which may include such antics as campfire cookouts and nature trails.
Alternatively you may wish to take the opportunity to shun such busy days, choosing instead to walk among the wildflowers, borrow a book or game from the library, or join a prayer group at the open-air chapel. Lounge areas and a communal campfire are on hand for those who’d like to gather together, and there’s plenty of space on each of the spacious sites for folk who need a bit of quiet time.
Don’t feel you need to drag all your own kit up here if you’d like to travel light: outdoor cooking areas are provided, and there’s all sorts of gear to hire, including Dutch ovens and pie irons. Firewood, ice and ice creams can be picked up at the shop, so you’ll just need to bring along the food and drinks (but please note no alcohol is allowed at this family-friendly campground).

Local attractions
For more outdoorsy activity, guests can canter off into the Catskills from a horse riding centre 40 minutes away or play a round at the 18-hole course 25 minutes away. Hancock’s also on the Upper Delaware river, with plenty of public access points for fishing, and kayaking, canoeing or tubing trips available just outside town.
There are heaps of hiking trails around Hancock too, including short, accessible walks for less mobile guests and lengthier treks for intrepid types. More leisurely views of the scenery can be had on a hot air balloon flight from Preston Park, half an hour away by car.
Should you wish to reacquaint yourselves with urban life, it’ll take you around an hour to drive to Binghamton for visits to Ross Park Zoo, Roberson Museum and Science Center or Kopernik Observatory and Science Center. It’s also worth taking a wander around the town to spot the six antique carousels (still in working order, to the delight of the small sorts).
