  • Dog-friendly getaway on 30 acres of private land near Tannersville
  • A five-minute drive to Kaaterskill Falls Trail Head and swimming spots
  • Stores and eateries five minutes’ drive away and lots of trails nearby
Hiking, fishing, bouldering, wild swimming, skiing, mountain biking, kayaking … when it comes to outdoor activities, Haines Falls Mountain Camping hits the mark. This dog-friendly getaway is on 30 acres of private land five minutes’ drive away from wild swimming spots and hiking trails such as the Kaaterskill Falls Trail Head. Keen hikers will be itching to get out from here. North Lake is 35 minutes’ walk away and has mountain paths and two lakes for good stuff like fishing, kayaking or canoeing. Popular hiking trails are all around too, whether on Hunter Mountain (10 minutes’ drive), in the Indian Head Wilderness (40 minutes) or around Colgate Lake (15 minutes). With all that action must come at least a few tasty treats and a good set of filling meals. Those can be sourced in Tannersville, five minutes’ drive away from Haines Falls Mountain Camping. The main street has bright buildings that are over 100 years old, including restaurants and antique shops with shutter-style windows. Well-fed and raring to go again, you might decide to take on the Tannersville Bike Path on the outskirts of the town or have a good gander in the 178 acres of meadows and wetlands at the Mountain Top Arboretum above the town (and 10 minutes’ drive away from your base).

Local attractions

It’s hard to miss the mighty Hunter Mountain (10 minutes’ drive). In the winter, the mountain is taken up almost entirely by skiers and snow tubers, but come summer time, the zipline and off-roading activities over stream crossings and mud passes take some of the limelight. Hike or off-road all the way to the 3200-foot summit, taking in the views of the 1,600-foot drop. To the south, the Indian Head Wilderness (40 minutes) has a fine, fine selection of trails and bouldering areas. Among those challenging trails, try the Roaring Kill Trail (15 minutes), Devil's Path Trail (15 minutes) and Plateau Mountain (15 minutes) for size. There are waterfalls too. Surrounded by 1500 acres of forest, Colgate Lake (15 minutes) is another excellent hiking spot. Set off right away on the four-mile Colgate Lake Trail, which joins up with the Escarpment Trail, or stick around the lake for activities like fishing and kayaking. Wildlife to keep your eyes peeled for includes deer, bear, porcupine and bobcat.
