A desert in the northernmost reaches of the US? Come and surprise yourself at the far-famed Desert of Maine, an unusual expanse of sand dunes surrounded by typical northeastern pine forest. This small-scale campground is located just next to the dunes in a forested area where there are plenty of amenities to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
Desert of Maine feels like a remote spot when you're here – something that's down to the trees, the stream and the abundant animal life – but it's actually a quick 20-minute drive from Portland and five minutes from the small town of Freeport. It's also just a couple of miles from the coast, putting Maine's most scenic coastal sights within easy reach.
The campground has facilities including a modern bath house and a camp store stocking basic provisions and firewood. Each site has access to a picnic table and a fire ring. Kids may particularly appreciate a stay here, as Desert of Maine has a natural playground, nature trails and a magical labyrinth that they can explore.
Desert of Maine is pet-friendly and family-friendly. Its warm and welcoming owners look forward to hosting you in this spectacular part of the Pine Tree State.
