  • Clean, well-maintained simple campground near West Mineral, Kansas
  • A 10-minute drive from fishing and hunting in Mined Land Wildlife Area
  • In the grounds of one of the biggest attractions in southeast Kansas
Bed down at Big Brutus, five minutes’ drive from the town of West Mineral, for Kansas stays that are also close to the borders with Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas. That’s a whole lot of states that are easily accessible from this quiet campground, and with major highways close by too to make trips to any/all of them as smooth as possible. But it’s not all about getting away from the place – in fact, there’s a rather large attraction right here on the grounds. The attraction in question is the self-same Big Brutus, a 160-foot-tall mining machine that’s not only the largest electric shovel in the world but also such an iconic emblem of the area’s industrial past it’s been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. You can see it from miles away on a clear day, but it’s very much worth coming along to have a closer look and learn a bit about the mining history and heritage of southeast Kansas. And it’s worth sticking around once you’ve seen the big beast up close too: the quiet, simple sites here are well kept (with a playground, toilets, showers, picnic tables and wifi provided) and they’re well placed for days of hiking, hunting and fishing around… well, whichever of the four states takes your fancy on that day…

Local attractions

If Big Brutus has inspired you to find out more about the area’s history, follow up with outings to Miners Hall Museum (35 minutes’ drive) and the Dalton Defenders Museum (an hour). Heritage of a different kind is on display at Decades of Wheels (35 minutes), a nostalgic spot full of cars from yesteryear. The natural landscape around here is just as fine as the heritage, with strip pits full of bass and other game fish nearby. Mined Land Wildlife Areas (10 minutes) is the closest place for fishing – and it’s also a great place for wildlife walks or hunting among the grasslands, wetlands and forest habitats. For more spectacular natural sights, head north to Grand Falls or south to Prairie State Park (both 50 minutes). And if you’d like to sample some of the produce of the area, maybe stop in for a tasting at Keltoi Winery or Flustered Blonde Winery (both 35 minutes).
