Stays full of scenery, sand and sporty days, oh my… Settle in for top notch hols at Camping Ribadesella, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the village of Ribadesella in the scenic principality of Asturias. The site’s well set up for active stays and there’s lots to keep kids and grownups busy: indoor and outdoor pools will get hols off to a splashing start (there are loungers by the pool for anyone after a more sedate few days), a high-season kids’ club will get the progeny out from underfoot when parents reach final straws, and tennis, ping pong, pétanque and miniature golf should burn off any residual energies. When ready to venture off site, there’s no need to go far. Book canoeing trips or horse riding adventures in reception or, when trad hol activities like sandcastle building and sea swims beckon, go the solo route by heading to the pretty and lengthy sandy stretch of Playa de Ribadesella, five minutes' drive or a 20-minute walk away. Plus, the village of Ribadesella (and its Old Town) are easily explorable five minutes from the site… Staying fed is a piece of cake here too, as there’s a restaurant on site (have a look at the pics to fall in love with the spectacular mountain views from the terrace), and barbecues are welcome. For self catering supplies and necessities, there’s a small shop on site and a butcher’s shop in the village.

Local attractions

As well as being gorgeously scenic, this part of Spain is full of history to explore: the Tito Bustillo cave, rock paintings and Rock Art Centre are within five minutes’ drive of the site. Too close to the present day? Head to the Jurassic Museum of Asturias 20 minutes away, where a collection of more than 8,000 fossils is on display. There’s history of a different kind a little further afield: Asturias is famed for its cider, so fans of the sweet stuff may want to venture immediately to the cider museum 45 minutes from the site, where there’s tasting and cidermaking galore. Prefer to stay out in the fresh air? Start with wanders along the Bufones de Pría (cliffs where impressive waves shoot into the air, so dress accordingly) or Guadamía beach, both within 20 minutes, or pile into the car for the 40-minute journey to the spectacularly scenic and mountainous Picos de Europa National Park. City days of two kinds are nearby too: it’s 35 minutes to the Laboral City of Culture, a centre of art and industrial creation, and the city of Gijón – with its gardens, beaches, Roman baths, palace, museums and aquarium – is 40 minutes from base.
