  • Quiet, scenic Extremadura site overlooking Orellana Reservoir
  • Sandy beach and Costa Dulce Blue Trail five minutes' walk away
  • Bar-restaurant on site with terrace overlooking the lake
Can an inland beach ever be as good as a coastal one? In the case of Extremadura’s Orellana Reservoir you’d have to say a resounding yes to that – the clear water, soft sand and excellent services of Playa de Orellana have led to it being the first inland beach in Spain to be awarded Blue Flag status. Fancy checking it out for yourself? You’ll be in pole position when you stay at Camping El Burgo, on a hillside overlooking the reservoir and just a few minutes’ walk from the shoreline and that lovely beach. That location means wonderfully easy access not only to days of sunbathing and swimming but also to fishing (for carp and black bass) or watersports like paddleboarding, kayaking and windsurfing. There are some excellent hiking trails around here too (including the popular Costa Dulce Blue Trail), and chances to go out birdwatching and nature spotting in nearby Natura 2000 areas. Add in a few historic sights dotted around the area and you should find you’ve got plenty nearby to keep you busy throughout your break. Time to relax after all these activities? Head back to the site and take a table at the bar-restaurant, which has views out over the lake and is a lovely spot to unwind in. There’s a play area on site where kids can run off any remaining energy, and you’ll have access to practical facilities including a launderette, wifi and bathrooms with showers and toilets. This is a scenic rural spot indeed, but handily it’s also only a few minutes' drive from Orellana la Vieja, which has a good collection of shops, cafés and places to eat.

Local attractions

The lake is certain to form the central attraction to your holiday, and it’s well worth exploring thoroughly, perhaps taking a hike or bike ride along one of the local trails (the Costa Dulce Blue Trail, Guadiana Nature Trail and PR-BA-180 Reservoirs Path are all popular choices) or getting out on the water to sail, kayak or paddleboard your way to far-flung corners to find quiet beaches, historical landmarks and wildlife areas. Heading away from the lake, you may like to venture over to the neighbouring lake, Embalse de la Serena for more watery scenery. A few highlights here include Mirador de la Atalaya (half an hour’s drive), Puebla de Alcocer Castle (35 minutes) and the conical Cerro Masatrigo (40 minutes), in the middle of the lake. You may also like a day out in Cáceres (an hour and a half), exploring the mix of architecture from across the ages and seeking out some of the locations from Game of Thrones.
