Rural location by the river

  • Riverside site on the border between Spain and Portugal in Extremadura
  • A 30-minute drive to Olivenza and Mourão; an hour to Badajoz
  • Direct access to a freshwater beach and site-organised watersports
Deep in gorgeous and untamed countryside, Cruceros Alqueva is a clever choice for guests looking to explore the best of southern Spain and Portugal. Why? Because this site looks out over the Guadiana river, which marks the border between the two countries, separating Extremadura from the Evora region. With the calm river and a grassy beach area right next to the site, this is just the spot to have a go at things like kayaking and paddleboarding. You can also swim safely in the river, have a snooze by the water or take a leisurely cruise downstream (there's an extra charge for this). 'Slow tourism' is the key phrase here; Cruceros Alqueva is all about low-key activities like keeping an eye out for wading birds around the site, stargazing on clear nights and simply chilling out. It's also a good idea to throw in sampling the local food, which you can do in the on-site restaurant (or out on the terrace if you fancy a romantic dinner for two…) If you’re staying for any length of time, you may be pleased to hear that there’s a laundry room as well as all the essentials like well-maintained loos and shower blocks so you all stay looking your best. You can keep tabs on the family elsewhere with the wifi connection, and there’s no need to leave your beloved pets behind, as dogs are allowed on site too. A 10-minute drive down the road brings you to Cheles, which turns up a handy basic supermarket, a number of bars and cafés, and a bakery.

What customers say

Lovely lakeside spot, praised for peace & day trip potential. However, several guests found it closed/inaccessible with no contact response. When open, facilities were limited, especially hot water in the single toilet/shower units. Poor upkeep & tricky narrow road access also noted.

Power optional gravel and sand travel trailer campsite

Liked The setting was absolutely amazing. The area around the lake is fabulous and so clean….. but

Disliked The site was all locked up and we couldn’t get in to the pitches. The phone number on the wall went to answer phone and no one called us back so we were basically stuck. We managed to set up across the disabled parking spaces of the restaurant and “wild” camped for the night. Luckily we only paid a deposit of 3€ but even so this site should not be advertised if it is not open. We were very disappointed. The road down to the site is very narrow and according to the poster on the restaurant there is some dispute with the local council going on. Such a shame.

From the manager: Buenos días,

Power optional gravel and sand travel trailer campsite

Liked The freshwater lake location is amazing. The staff at the bar/cafe by the lake were lovely

Disliked Accessed by a miles of single track road with fee passing points; not easy in a motorhome. No one at reception from arrival at 19:00 until leaving at 08:30. No response from the bell or the numbers provided. I’d still be there now if I hadn’t worked out how to open the automatic gate myself. Misadventures facilities on site as the cafe/bar/restaurant is off-site by the beach. Huge empty restaurant open from 9:00-24:00 with a surly waitress who told me if I wanted hot food, go to the beach bar where I could get pizza and that she would only serves sandwiches (explains why it was empty). One female toilet/shower that didn’t lock & felt unsafe. Rubbish piled up by reception and the ladies toilet, which stank. Not been cleared for days & maybe even weeks

Quiet picturesque location let down by poor toilet/shower facilities.

Power optional gravel and sand travel trailer campsite

Liked It’s a very quiet location with lovely walks along the lake.

Disliked The site was locked when we arrived. After ringing the site telephone number a lady arrived after 15 minutes to let us in. She did not speak English but with the help of Google she was able to give us the information that we needed. There is only one toilet and shower for the men and the same again for the women for the whole camp. There is only enough hot water for one five minute shower. Everyone else will have to wait a couple of hours for the water to heat up again.

Local attractions

When you finally drag yourself away from the beach (50 metres’ walk) and the romantic scenery, you can’t ignore the castles dotted around the region, which were mainly built in medieval times as defence forts. Perched on a rocky crag, the ramparts of Monsaraz Castle (40 minutes) have far-reaching views across the plains of Extremadura, and you can also explore the keep and dungeons at Miraflores (30 minutes). There are several lovely towns along the banks of the river. Olivenza is a photogenic spot with flamboyant blue Portuguese tiles in its churches and a gently crumbling 16th-century bridge across the Guadiana. Sleepy Mourão (both 30 minutes) is an Instagrammer’s dream, packed with whitewashed houses and churches, plus lovely river views, while Badajoz (an hour) turns up a Moorish fortress, a majestic cathedral and a couple of art museums to nose around. And after soaking up all the history, the next thing to do is to seek out a shaded bar in the cobbled alleys of Cheles (10 minutes), put your feet up and enjoy a glass of ice-cold beer.
