  • Well-equipped site in the village of Prades, in Tarragona province
  • Monasterio de Poblet half an hour’s drive; Tarragona one hour
  • Restaurant, farm, games area, barbecue, multipurpose rooms and a spa
On the outskirts of Prades (known as ‘the red village’ after the colour of its stone buildings), family-friendly Xalet de Prades is a top spot for hiking and cycling enthusiasts keen to explore the peaks of Muntanyes de Prades range, in the Catalonia province of Tarragona. It’s also an excellent destination for guests who are looking forward to embracing a more relaxed lifestyle, whether that entails lounging poolside, soaking in the Jacuzzi or lying on a blanket for a spot of stargazing. (The area has received the Starlight Certification for its remarkable low levels of light pollution.) Chances are you won’t even have to worry too much about keeping the children entertained, since they’ll likely be making new friends in the games room. Surrounded by tall trees, the site feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere, but in fact, Prades’s central square is only a five-minute walk away, so you can stroll into the village for a bite to eat or to stock up on provisions for the barbecue (in a sheltered area back at base with heaps of seating options). There’s also an on-site restaurant serving traditional meals prepared with locally sourced produce (alongside kids’ favourites like pizzas), plus a selection of regional wines. And if imbibing the local reds has whetted your thirst, you can book a visit to nearby vineyards and wineries – complete with guided tastings, of course… In addition to toilet and shower blocks (with facilities for disabled guests), amenities at Xalet de Prades include a launderette, free charging points for electric cars and a bike maintenance shed.

Local attractions

The surrounding Muntanyes de Prades area is dotted with interesting sights, such as the Mirador de Sant Roc viewpoint (five minutes’ drive), the natural rock formation at Roca Foradada (10 minutes) and Bosc pintat de Poblet (half an hour), a forested area with mushroom art on the tree trunks. Built by the Cistercian order in the late 12th century (but including many later additions), the Monasterio de Santa María de Poblet (half an hour) is a monumental complex surrounded by a crenellated wall. It also contains the tombs of the kings and queens of Catalonia and Aragon. Among the Roman ruins in Tarragona (one hour) are an amphitheatre and a track for chariot races, plus the Ferreres Aqueduct; an archaeological museum displays artefacts unearthed in the area. There are also beaches and a pretty marina lined with seafood restaurants.
