Set just outside of Bot, Catalonia's Càmping Terra Alta should be a nice pick for cyclists. It has direct access to the Vias Verdes de Terra Alta, a greenway running for around 90 kilometres between Alcañiz and Tortosa, across the Canaletes river valley; this traffic-free trail should lead to stress-free pedalling around the region with the kids. With views over the Els Ports Natural Park, the site makes a handy base for hiking and canoeing. The steep and dry landscapes of the region mean this is a lovely wine-producing area too; there are plenty of wine cellars and wine tours in the surrounding area. No to wine as a souvenir? The region also bottles up excellent extra virgin olive oil: for drizzling rather than guzzling, of course... And then there's the site setting: Càmping Terra Alta is separated into terraces, all shaded with olive trees and with views most definitely on the spectacular scale – the mountains and forests are so splendid that you might recognise them from several paintings by Picasso (he used to hang out around this region in the summer months). Among all the landscape and greenery, the site has a pool (open during high season only) to dip in on hot days, a recreation area to mingle at, a play area and a TV to show football matches. Rather handily for a setting with direct access to a Via Verde, bicycle hire and a bicycle repair shop are available on site. If you want to sample the regional cuisine as well as its wine and olive oil, the bar-restaurant serves seasonal products, grilled meat, sausages and charcuterie, all produced in the area.

This tranquil, tidy site earns praise for its amazing location and gorgeous views, perfect for Via Verda and Terra Alta adventures. Visitors love the well-kept saltwater pool, hedge-divided private pitches, and spotless restrooms. Staff are consistently friendly, helpful, and welcoming. Liked I just loved this site. We stayed in 10 different sites across France and Spain in 0ur 30 day camping trip and this was my favourite. Spacious pitches with dappled shade and good privacy. Superb toilet and shower facilities, spotlessly clean and within easy reach. The staff were friendly and helpful, especially Roger who recommended some fantastic spots to visit by car and bike. I don't normally care about a pool but the one here is so lovely. Bar/restaurant is also great.
The location is fantastic, right on the Via Verde - a superb cycle route along the old railway line. There are brilliant swimming spots within cycle range at Les Olles and Estrets d'Arnes and within a short drive a Matarranya. I will definitely return to this part of Spain and to this camp site.
Also a shout out to Pitchup for a great website!

Disliked If forced to say something then perhaps the dish wash area, though clean and functional, is quite snug for 6 :-)

Liked És un camping ideal per fer algun dels trams de la Via Verda i vistar la Terra Alta o el Matarranya. La piscina és d'aigua salada i si està d'allò més bé. Els lavabos estan molt nets i cuidats. Té un restaurant que no està malament, com que feia tres o quatre anys que no hi anàvem ens han semblat cars els preus del bar/restaurant . Sobretot les begudes. Cal destacar que els gestors del càmping es van adonar que havíem pagat de més i ens van abonar la diferència. Són molt legals. Un 10.

Disliked Feia moltíssima calor els dies que hi hem estat.

Local attractions

Pedal off and get pleasantly lost on the Vias Verdes de Terra Alta greenway, or have a more organised day out to one of the team's favourite spots on the route, La Fontcalda Sanctuary in the Canaletes river valley. The sanctuary centres around the remains of a 14th-century church, in a green area and church square near the river. A restaurant and bar are open during the summer and on weekends during spring. And there is, of course, also the wine… piles of wine cellars are around to tour, but if you don't want to travel/stagger too far, try the two at the site's local village: Cooperativa Agrícola Sant Josep and Celler Menescal. Around the Tarragona area, you could travel along to the coast, spy the wildlife of the Ebro Delta Nature Park, or see how far you can get along the Penedès Wine and Cava Route, the trail with wine-based activities as well as local foodie festivals along its route. If you're a history buff, look for several sites and ruins locally relating to the Battle of the Ebro, the biggest and longest battle in the Spanish Civil War.
