  • Family camping in the Parque Natural de Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia
  • Sotoserrano five minutes’ drive and the Meandro del Melero 20 minutes
  • Beach on the Alagón River, a chiringuito bar and a small supermarket
Really, really want to escape the rat race? Then it’s time to get away to Camping Vega de Francia, where you can get thoroughly relaxed at 420 metres above sea level, on the outskirts of gorgeous, medieval Sotoserrano in the Parque Natural de Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia. And good things just keep on coming at this campsite. It’s surrounded by a spectacular landscape of mountains, forested valleys and rivers – gateway to walking and cycling adventures, fishing and kayaking – and the long-distance Camino de La Vega hiking route runs right past the perimeter. Pitches are set under the sleepy shade of trees, and family facilities include showers, washing machines and a dryer (the latter for a small extra charge). Kids can occupy themselves happily in the games room with pool and table football (and a TV for lazy afternoons), out in the play area or splashing around on Playa de Sotoserrano river beach a short walk away. There’s a laidback chiringuito bar with an alfresco terrace overlooking the Alagón River, and a well-stocked supermarket selling local specialities (and wines for adults keen to get even more chilled).

Power optional grass and earth campervan campsite

Liked Quiet site - quite remote - a beauty spot by a river. All motor home facilities available. Good showers, good WiFi, useful shop/bar/restaurant. Level pitches with shade. Friendly greeting.

Disliked Nothing important.

Power optional grass and earth travel trailer campsite

Liked Beautiful location, friendly & helpful site manager, flat site with very clean facilities and plenty of shade. Lovely river for swimming that runs by the camp which is at the end of a very quiet single track road.

Disliked Bit of a self service check in approach and pitches were difficult to understand and were quite short. (Under 7m). But we found pitch 23 was bigger than the others and worked well. Lots of biting insects and noisey critters at night but it's close to the river. No resturant as out of high season

Power optional grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

(Agosto)

Local attractions

First stop for active outdoorsy types will be the Parque Natural de Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia (accessed directly from the site), where you can ramble through oak forests and go kayaking down deep canyons carved out by rivers. Be sure to have the camera ready at the Meandro del Melero (20 minutes’ drive), a famed and scenic bend on the Alagón River, and anyone with an interest in wildlife should keep hold of the binoculars for (rare) sightings of lynx, black storks and wild boar. For a journey back in time, head to historic Sotoserrano (five minutes) to explore its medieval streets lined with half-timbered buildings – particularly pretty when lit up at night – and have a stroll across the centuries-old Roman bridge crossing the Alagón. Other traditional and centuries-old villages to discover include Sequeros (half an hour) and La Alberca (20 minutes), both with café-lined piazzas ideal for an evening aperitivo or two.
