  • Peaceful site surrounded by mountain views in the Valderredible Valley
  • A 10-minute drive to Mount Hijedo; 15 minutes to Orbaneja del Castillo
  • Outdoor pools, grill restaurant, games area and chillout space
Proper rural peace and quiet, a gorgeous setting surrounded by mountains… and a friendly, relaxed site at which to enjoy it all? Grab yourself a corner of Camping Cantabria, on the banks of the Ebro river in the Valderredible Valley, a little way from the village of Polientes. Here between the plateau and the Cantabrian mountains, the microclimate is a special one – and the campsite’s atmosphere is, too. This is a place where you can get out into the surrounding countryside for hikes, cave visits, birdwatching, watersports or mushroom picking… or skip all that activity and chill out right there on site (the organic Cider de la Coruja is produced on this land, so that might also help…). Everything here has been set up to help you, should you choose that more relaxed option. The main draw is an outdoor pool area (with a main pool and a splash pool for the kids), and guests can also play games of football, volleyball and table tennis while kids scamper about at the play area. If even that’s too much, head over to the chillout area, where you can have a peaceful drink while looking out to the scenery from open or covered tables. That area is part of the site’s spacious restaurant, which specialises in flame-grilled meat from the site’s own animals, including Tudanca beef and Iberian pork. Barbecues are allowed on site too if this has inspired you to have a go at your own bit of grilling.

Local attractions

There are plenty of options to get active in the local area, particularly if you fancy hiking along trails taking in rock-cut hermitages, natural wells and stunning mountain views. Mount Hijedo visitor centre (10 minutes’ drive) is the jumping-off point for mountain trails, with Tobazo Waterfall (10 minutes) a good option for more leisurely strolls. Cycling, rafting and kayaking are all popular around this area as well, or you could follow the Villaescusa de Ebro via ferrata climbing route (10 minutes) or take a dip in the natural waters of Pozo Azul (half an hour). After night falls, head to Observatorio Astronómico de Cantabria (10 minutes) to look up into the dark skies through a powerful telescope. A trip to nearby Orbaneja del Castillo (15 minutes) is highly recommended – the village is known as one of Spain’s prettiest, with a medieval centre and a series of waterfalls a short walk away. For another intriguing sight, head to the once-inhabited caves of Ojo Guareña Natural Monument (55 minutes), among the biggest of its kind anywhere in the world.
