It's free, quick and easy!
- Three kilometres from the famous Monasterio de Piedra
- Hiking trails, wildlife and spectacular scenery
- Pool, bar-restaurant, toddlers' play area and communal room
You might think you've seen a Spanish monastery before, but we respectfully submit this cultural know-how can't be truly ticked off until you've had a visit to the stone monastery and water gardens of Monasterio de Piedra in Aragon's Zaragoza.
The famed structure here dates back to the twelfth century and was declared a national monument in 1983 to become one of the most visited attractions of Aragon: one could be geeky enough at the buildings and churches, but it's all among a peaceful, riverside and waterfall-filled area that's now a natural park – go and see with some immediacy.
Three kilometres from these splendid sights and in also splendid surroundings is Camping Lago Resort, overlooking La Tranquera reservoir and a site for hikers, anglers, wildlife watchers and families. Several hiking trails are in the immediate surroundings and the site is a short walk from the nearby village of Nuévalos – also highly scenic…
The site has a pool and a playground, overlooked by the spacious hall of the bar-restaurant which serves tasty meals, pizzas, quick bites and takeaways. There's also a small grocery shop selling essentials like milk, drinks and condiments; a mini cinema for kids, and a play area for toddlers, in the communal room for all guests with board games and a small library.
Camping Lago Resort also has an amenities block with free hot showers, a coin-operated washing machine and a tumble dryer.

Local attractions
Such a splendid monastery this is, built as a defensive fort by the Moors before being captured in 1194, all in a scenic and mountainous setting by the Piedra river and now easily accessible a few kilometres off the main A-2 motorway.
Get to the monastery and its water gardens via a two-hour walk around its natural park, a place filled with waterfalls, caves, lakes, river and wildlife, although you might want to take a bit longer to stop off at famed spots like the Cola de Caballo waterfall and the Iris cave below its fall 50 metres down.
Other hiking trails in the area are from Camping Lago Resort to La Tranquera reservoir, a popular local spot for watersports like waterskiing, sailing and canoeing as well as for fishing. Angling is also available in the nearby Piedra river.
Also around – yes, you'd better stay for a couple of weeks – is the spa town of Alhama de Aragon, 15 kilometres from the campsite and filled with eight hot springs and a thermal lake at which to get on your indulgent groove.
