- Scenic glampsite overlooking the Costa del Sol’s Fahala valley
- A 30-minute drive from Málaga and 40 minutes from Marbella
- Outdoor swimming pool, woodfired hot tub and orange trees on site
For secluded hols in a prettily scenic spot less than 25 minutes’ drive from Costa del Sol beaches, make your way to the gorgeous Mariposa Libre, a family-friendly glampsite five minutes from the village of Cártama in Andalusia.
Picture the scene: here’s luxury glamping in a stunning spot remote enough that a car (or other mode of personal transportation) is necessary, but well-placed enough that sandy beaches, heady hikes and busy cities are all within roughly half an hour. Those at a loss for what to do – so much to choose from – would do well to chat with Dutch owners Marcel and Maybritte, who can recommend plenty hereabouts.
Spending days chilling on site comes highly recommended too, as guests might be enticed by fine views of the Fahala Valley, hours cooling off in the outdoor pool, lazing about under that Spanish sun on day beds, taking siestas on the swinging lounge bed, or unknotting muscles in the woodfired hot tub. Wanders about the site are also a must in order to meet the horses, sheep and chickens, or to stroll among the orange trees.
When it comes to eats, this is very much a self-catered affair. Guests can buy ingredients in the supermarket in Cártama and sort something home-cooked in the in-unit or outdoor kitchens. On nights when a break from hot stoves appeals, there are also a handful of restaurants in the village.

Local attractions
Guests hereabouts ought not waste proximity to the coastal city of Málaga, half an hour’s drive from base. If only a handful of spots can be visited, make them the stunning palatial fortress of Alcazaba, the bullring museum, the Picasso museum and the winery, though multiple visits wouldn’t go astray either.
Continue city days with a trip to the famed seaside resort of Marbella, where there’s much more to do than clubbing. Visitors can take to the beaches for watersports, swims and sunbathing, have a go on go-karting tracks, explore a handful of museums and gardens, and wander between the Salvador Dalí sculptures dotted about.
Take a break from the urban with outdoorsy explores, starting with the spectacular El Caminito del Rey, a one-way (non-looped) hike along boardwalks built onto canyon walls. The route starts in Ardales (30 minutes) and finishes at the lake of Guadalhorce, and guests must be sure to book in advance.
Less energy-filled days are to be had by sticking closer to home base. Kids – and grownups – can be handily entertained with trips to Aqualand Torremolinos waterpark (20 minutes), jaunts on the fair rides at Tivoli World (25 minutes), tours and petting at Crocodile Park (20 minutes), and afternoons watching dolphins and sea lions at Selwo Marina (30 minutes).
