  • Peaceful site one mile out of Springbok town
  • Deep in Namaqualand; excellent stopover for trips to and from Namibia
  • Pool and laundry services on site; well-maintained facilities
Cape Town, Springbok, Namibia, Namaqualand ... and the N7: all names you should familiarise yourself with if you're having a holiday anywhere in South Africa. And what a cinch it is to do so from the Northern Cape's Springbok Caravan Park, with easy access to the whole heap. Based on the R355 road to the airport, the site is just one mile out of Springbok town. Make the N7 the second point you trace on your map, as this mighty road and national route runs all the way from Cape Town to the Namibian border at Vioolsdrif and so is likely to feature on plans for any South African road trip. And speaking of the Namibian border? It's an easy hour from Springbok Caravan Park, which is in the famed area of Namaqualand and its swathes of colourful spring flowers. Run by Betsie and Paul, the park is a nifty and well-kept stopover spot for all the above, whether on a lengthy Northern Cape or South African trip, or to use as a base to access the colours and activities of Namaqualand. The park has an outdoor pool for leisurely times on site, as well as convenient laundry facilities. Restaurants, shops and other services are five minutes' drive away in Springbok. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed and amenities include toilets and hot showers, disabled facilities and areas for washing up.

Local attractions

Although fairly small, the town of Springbok is well known in South Africa and the Northern Cape, partly for its mining and Boer War history, and partly as the last stopover town before crossing the border into Namibia. Springbok's also the biggest town in the lush Namaqualand region, a wildlife haven popular with botany buffs and sightseers. Namaqua National Park, slightly west of the N7, is a top pick for flora fans: it has more succulent plants than any other arid area on the planet, including over 1,000 flower species that live only in the park. For wildlife watching – and more spring flowers, as well as mountain bike and hiking trails – the Goegap Nature Reserve is to Springbok's south east. Species to spot here include hartebeest, oryx, springbok, gemsbok and aardwolf; the first three of these were only reintroduced to the reserve in the early 2000s.
