  • Hilltop site on the Garden Route with stunning ocean/mountain views
  • A 10-minute drive from the beach and the Wilderness National Park
  • Bar and woodfired pizzas, braii area, communal kitchen and TV lounge
Want mountains, forests, rivers and ocean? A spot of surfing, some ancient rock paintings and maybe an eagle encounter or two? In the hills overlooking the Indian Ocean in South Africa’s Western Cape Province, The Wild Farm Backpackers makes a nifty base for all such outdoor antics; around the region, it's a 10-minute drive from the coastal town of Wilderness and around 50 minutes from major stopoffs on the Garden Route like Mossel Bay and Knysna. The views at The Wild Farm Backpackers are unbeatable: the Indian Ocean to the south, the five lakes of the Wilderness National Park to the east and the Outeniqua Mountains to the north. You can take them all in from the terrace of the fully-licensed bar, and indeed, everywhere else… there’s even a great view from the showers... Those showers are spotlessly clean and pumping hot, and part of a package of comforts ensuring your stay is wild in only the right ways. If you feel like returning to civilisation for a while, sidle over to the lounge, sink onto a sofa and watch TV, or wow your fellow guests on the pool table. Peckish? Pizzas come hot and crisp from the Wild Farm's own woodfired oven. There’s also a spacious barbecue/braai area for outdoor feasting, as well as a fully-equipped communal kitchen and a vegetable garden. For a change from campfire cuisine, Wilderness has an array of eating out options, some wild, some with tablecloths...

Local attractions

Want to see Africa? A swift method involves making the 10-minute car trip to the Map of Africa Viewpoint: from a hilltop near Wilderness and overlooking a bend in the Kaaimans River, the landscape suddenly resembles the shape of the continent. Also 10 minutes away, the forested slopes, rivers, lakes and beaches of the Wilderness National Park are brimming both with wildlife and different ways to see it: spot kingsfishers, egrets and the vivid plumage of Knysna Loeries as you hike, horse trek or canoe round the park; many of the trails here end conveniently with waterfalls and pools for dips. If mountains are more your thing, it’s about an hour to the Otenqiqua Mountains and surrounding Witfontein Nature Reserve, where there are hikes of varying lengths and difficulty through high passes full of rock paintings, burial sites and markers left by the early settlers... as eagles and Cape sugarbirds flit overhead. Hit the beach in 10 minutes down at Wilderness or head east or west depending on your levels of surfing agility: Buffels Bay is a good spot to learn the art of wave riding and Mossel Bay is where you go when you’re good at it; both are about 50 minutes’ drive away.
