Campsite at night

  • Quiet site 10 minutes drive from the UNESCO-listed Cradle of Humankind
  • Maropeng visitor hub 10 minutes’ drive; Bothongo Wondercave 15 minutes
  • Café, restaurant and chill-out area; fishing and stargazing available
It’s not every day you can pitch up near a UNESCO World Heritage Site – but at CradleLicious Farm Camp, you get to do exactly that. Set between the Magaliesberg mountains and the summer-seasonal waterways, the site is in Gauteng province, 10 minutes’ drive from the Cradle of Humankind, birthplace of the earliest ancestors of modern humans. Once there, expect heavenly sunsets on cloudless nights, crackling fires as the evening darkens, stargazing deep into the night and the call of jackals nearby… This nearly wild farm site combines untamed nature with handy 21st-century amenities while maintaining its African heritage. Facilities include choose-your-own grass pitches, a coffee shop, local dishes served in the restaurant (or available as takeaways) and a covered chilled space where everyone can hang out and discuss their day’s adventures. The fun stuff? Fishing is available on site, you can splash around at swimming hole and dogs are welcome – please keep them under control around the grazing cattle. Practical details? There’s a modern shower block and security 24/7.

Local attractions

First stop the Cradle of Humankind? Start your visit at Maropeng (10 minutes’ drive), the official visitor centre where you can learn about human fossils discovered in the limestone caves and take an interactive journey through time. Combine your trip with a tour of NIROX Sculpture Park (also 10 minutes), where sculptures of the human form are scattered over landscaped gardens. Your best chance of spotting Big Five animals locally is at Bothongo Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve (15 minutes), where lions, giraffes and zebras roam free; take the self-drive safari to spot them all, and then go underground to see the glistening stalagmites and stalactites in Bothongo Wondercave (also 15 minutes). Further afield, you can stroll across monumental Hartbeespoort Dam (45 minutes) for glorious mountain views, take a drive around the reservoir or go boating and fishing on the water. Nearby is the Monkey Sanctuary, Hartbeespoort (40 minutes), safe haven for rescue lemurs and monkeys.
