General
- Chocolate-themed glampsite on the banks of the Drava in Natura 2000
- A 10-minute drive from Maribor and the Pohorje ski resort
- Chocolate breakfasts, workshops, massages; sauna; free homemade wine
Nursing a sweet tooth or craving cocoa? Settle in for a decadent stay at Chocolate Village by the River, a family-friendly glampsite five minutes’ drive from the village of Limbuš and 10 minutes from Slovenia’s second-largest city, Maribor.
In the Natura 2000 nature park and on the banks of the Drava river, this is a top spot for peaceful hols full of watersports (with canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and sailing nearby), leisurely riverbank walks, and pedals along the long-distance Drava cycle route, a 366-kilometre trail that passes through the site and joins Italy, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia together.
And yet none of that is the big draw hereabouts – everything is eclipsed by the chocolate (the site is well named...). Guests can sample chocolate breakfasts, get stuck in with chocolate workshops, tours or tastings in the Teta Frida chocolate factory on site, and wander to the treetop wellness lodge for a chocolate bath, chocolate massages or a chocolate cosmetics session.
If things start to feel a little too saccharine, time away from chocolate can be had too. The starting point for dips is the natural swimming pool (blessedly chocolate-free; you're not Augustus Gloop) and the Finnish sauna awaits when it's time to unwind further.
And then? The Gourmet Shelter gives away free homemade wine, and has a wide selection of bottled wine and local delicacies to be perused.

Local attractions
Guests who are able to pry themselves away from the smell of chocolate should find lots to entertain in the area around this site. City days are a cinch for those keen to burn a hole in their wallets: it’s 10 minutes’ drive to Maribor (Slovenia’s second-largest city) and the Europark shopping centre, which has plenty of high-street stores to explore.
More of a history buff than a shopaholic? Stick around Maribor to visit museums, a 16th-century Renaissance-style town hall, a 15th-century castle (with spectacular frescoes) and a 16th-century water tower. If none of the options quite entices, saunters around the city’s cathedral, aquarium or winery might appeal instead.
Active guests will be kept busy indeed, depending on what time of year they arrive. Bikers not interested in the Drava route might be keen to head to the mountain biking trails of Ruše, 10 minutes away, while aquatic types have the Dooplek wakepark within 25 minutes. The real coup, though, is proximity to Pohorje, the largest ski resort in Slovenia, placing guests within 10 minutes of hitting the slopes during colder months.
Anyone up for longer jaunts can head for the borders with Austria (30 minutes) and Croatia (40 minutes), with the Austrian city of Graz around an hour and 15 minutes away. Prefer to stick to Slovenia? It’s an hour and a half to the capital city, Ljubljana.
