It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site on the shores of pristine Vračevgajsko lake
- A 10-minute drive from Deliblato Sands (the ‘European Sahara')
- Private lakeside beach with fishing, diving, cycling and swimming
How does a lakeside site 10 minutes’ drive from a desert, 15 minutes from an entire other country and 35 minutes from the nearest city sound? If the answer is ‘Wowzah’, head along to Camp Oaza, a family-friendly site a little over half an hour from Vršac in South Banat.
The site’s on the shores of Vračevgajsko lake, one of six artificial lakes just outside the town of Bela Crkva (five minutes away). It’s got its own private sandy beach, making swimming, diving, fishing and simply lazing in the Serbian sun an absolute cinch, and there’s canoe and boat hire on site when getting out on the water beckons. Fancy something altogether drier? The site’s about 10 minutes from Deliblato Sands natural reserve (the ‘European Sahara’), which is the last desert in Europe.
The Romanian border is just 15 minutes to the east, bringing some of that country’s most scenic national parks within easy reach, but if it’s urban days that you crave, then turn to the north instead – Vršac has a castle, bishop’s palace, tower and cathedral to explore, as well as museums and wineries.
Lazier days back on site can be spent on the indoor soccer court, working up an appetite to sort in the shared kitchenette or on one of the public barbecues, or with jaunts to one of the restaurants within five minutes of the site.

Local attractions
For spectacular days out and about in nature, a trip over the border into Romania is a must. The site is a 45-minute drive from Nera Gorge-Beușnița National Park, where there are stunning waterfalls, lakes and caves to explore, including the famed Bigar waterfall and Ochiul Beiului lake.
A little further on is Semenic-Caraș Gorge National Park (an hour and 10 minutes away), where there are more falls, lakes and caves, as well as some fab ski slopes if stays coincide with snowier months. Nature cravings still not satisfied? The Serbian Fruška Gora National Park is just under three hours away, and the rare animals of Koviljsko Petrovaradinske Rit Special Nature Reserve can be observed within two and a quarter hours.
There’s plenty of history hereabouts if boffins want to dive in: the 15th-century Serb Orthodox Mesić and Bavanište monasteries are both within 50 minutes, and the Romanian Mănăstirea Călugăra and Nera Monastery are less than an hour from base. If castles are more of an appeal, then head to Smederevo Fortress or Kapetanovo, both about an hour away.
For wider swathes of history, consider a trip to Belgrade instead. The capital is just over an hour and a half's drive from the site and has museums, churches and historical sites to roam around, as well as zoos, theatres, restaurants and shops.
