- No-frills rural site on a farm a 20-minute drive from Caldas da Rainha
- Buddha Eden 25 minutes’ drive; Praia da Foz do Arelho half an hour
- Dogs welcome; remote site with shaded pitches
Time to lower your stress levels? It’s easy to have a few days of complete peace, serenity and silence when you book a spot at Quarto do Urso. This wild-camping site sits on a working farm on the outskirts of the village of São Gregório da Fanadia (five minutes’ drive or a 20-minute walk), in western Portugal.
Non-electric grass (and earth) pitches here are surrounded by vegetation and shaded by trees, so you (and your dog, who is a welcome guest) can truly feel at one with nature. Be aware that this is as no-frills as camping gets: there is no hot water for showering and no cold water for drinking, either, so stock up on bottled water (and anything else you might need during your stay) at the shops in the village of A dos Francos (five minutes) or in Óbidos or Caldas da Rainha (20 minutes for both). Both Óbidos and Caldas da Rainha also have a good choice of dining options, though the nearest eatery (a Portuguese/Indian restaurant) is in A dos Francos.
When it comes to exploring the local area, you’re in a pretty enviable position here, within a half-hour’s drive of Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros, with its limestone reliefs and cave systems, and about the same distance from Atlantic beaches such as sandy Praia da Foz do Arelho.

Local attractions
Stretching along a mountain ridge, Óbidos is home to a medieval fortress originally built by the Moors in the 8th century. Stroll through the town’s cobbled streets, past whitewashed houses and along the crenellated fortifications, stopping to take in views of the vineyard-dotted valley below.
Caldas da Rainha is renowned for its thermal baths, which were first discovered around the 15th century. The painter José Malhoa was born in the town, and a museum in the middle of lush Parque Dom Carlos I displays his works, alongside sculptures and decorative objects. The vibrant Praça da Fruta market is a riot of colours – from fruit and vegetables, but also flowers.
Buddha Eden (25 minutes’ drive) is a vast Oriental-style garden created in response to the 2001 destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan, in Afghanistan. It is filled with statues of serene, golden and reclining Buddhas, plus lotus ponds, pagodas and cherry trees. This splendid landscape sits in the grounds of a winery, so be sure to book a tasting tour, too.
