Lovely settings for your holiday

General

  • Eco-friendly and sustainable site in a remote and rural location
  • 35 minutes' drive from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Évora
  • 7.5 forest hectares, communal terrace and solar-powered oven

Are you the sort who seeks as remote a location as possible while on holiday? In lush and serene surroundings, deep in a rural setting and among ancient dolmens and menhirs, castles and fortresses? Strike out into the Portuguese countryside to have a restful – or active – green break at Bubulcus & Bolotas Camping, about 35 minutes' drive from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Évora.

The team here proudly points out that the site is rightly remote, in a quiet locale away from busy towns and tourist resorts. It covers seven and a half hectares of rich Mediterranean forest, with all accommodation areas set secludedly and spaciously well away from each other for maximum privacy and peace. The vibe is firmly friendly on eco and sustainable grounds too: showers and electricity are solar powered and LED bulbs are used throughout.

A solar-powered oven is also on site so you can sort eats in these fine surrounds, or you can bring along your own barbecue to fry up your food among the cork trees, flowers and scrubs. Local town Vimieiro is about six kilometres away for supplies and is reachable by foot.

Once food is sorted, on the barbie and then consumed, move along to the communal terrace near the reception office to digest, snooze, read, and charge batteries and small devices. Then all to bed, for restful slumbers and dreams of what to amble off to the following day: old old stones, river beaches, castles, cycling routes...

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Group bookings of 5 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Access is very difficult. We have a large rig of a Navara and a Coachman Laser 650 and we only just made it up the 2km gravel track and onto the site. Very narrow and lots of boulders. It only suits a small rig [with a motor mover] or a small motorhome.

If you like wild camping, but with the benefit of the usual facilities, this is for you. The owners have created a wonderful campsite in the Alentejo scrub. The pitches are spread apart, some with electricity, some not, catering for tents, motorhomes and caravans. Water is provided from a 350 metre deep well which is sufficient to provide flushing toilets, showers and a swimming pool. Electricity is solar and toilet waste is treated organically; motorhomers and caravanners please note, no chemical toilet additive, only green please. And in keeping with the eco theme, you are asked to keep water usage to a reasonable minimum. The benefit of the well water is that it tastes beautiful! The owners, Waldemar and Tania, are friendly and welcoming and deserve every success with this unusual enterprise. They told us that in the spring, around April, the dusty dry land we saw is carpeted by wild flowers. Can't wait to see it.

    Disliked:

The only downside during our visit was that we were plagued by wasps. No doubt this is an unfortunate side effect of the location in the countryside but there seemed to be a particular problem this year. Waldemar told me he had already cleared 30 nests.

Peace and quiet and also with what the owners were ... 04/19/2018

Peace and quiet and also with what the owners were trying to achieve. As it was early season the weather was not king but owner offered to help as much as e could especially when we moved pitches as waterlogged.

    Disliked:

Should record no chemical waste disposal unless organic. Fortunately I did have some but drove 44 km round trip to dispose of properly. I am sure many would empty into a hedge.

From the manager...

It was a pleasure to have this couple as guests. Indeed it should be clear that we cannot process chemical waste disposal. We are a fully ecological camping site and completely off grid. We provide for our own clean water and also we have our own treatment of waste water. This is a fully biological system that would be seriously disturbed by chemical waste.

Local attractions

Although this is a secluded and remote location, there are options aplenty for days out around the site, from getting active to getting stuck into the many attractions of local history and heritage.

The river beaches of Mora and Fronteira are a short drive away, and several shoreside beaches are at the lakes of Maranhão, Montargil and Alqueva. For pedalling or walking, ask at the Bubulcus & Bolotas Camping reception for directions to and info on the plentiful cycling and hiking routes close to the site. You could also set out to find some of the many dolmens and menhirs scattered around the region: these can be quite elusive, so once again ask the site team for directions and tips.

Plenty of the hills around this part of Portuguese countryside have a castle or a fortress, many open to the public. For more piles of ancient buildings including a famed Roman temple, the Palace of the Dukes of Cadaval and stunning 13th-century cathedral, drive 35 minutes or so south to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Évora.

Estremoz, Evoramonte and Arraiolos are all within 25 minutes' drive.
