  • Small site on the banks of Porsangerfjorden in Northern Norway
  • Lakselv five minutes' drive; Stabbursdalen National Park 15 minutes
  • Good base for fishing, hiking and birdwatching; café and bar on site
Is it time to stay at Norway’s fourth-longest fjord? Take a look at Fjordutsikten Camping, and you might soon be nodding ‘yes’ to that question. This small, stunning site is right at the water’s edge on Northern Norway's 123-kilometre-long fjord, Porsangerfjorden. Waking up to fjord views is a given here, but if you’re lucky, you might also get to spy the Northern Lights dancing across the skies above the site. And if not, the stunning sunsets over the fjord (with all sorts of lovely shades) will surely provide plenty of sky-based entertainment. You’re also in pole position for a variety of activities in this area, whether it’s boat trips, fishing and hiking around the fjord. For walking, drive around 15 minutes to Stabbursdalen National Park, home to waterfalls, mountains and the northernmost pine forest in the world. Birdwatchers are in for a treat at Porsangerfjorden too, as the fjord has been declared an Important Bird Area with species like velvet scoters, lesser white-fronted geese and purple sandpipers. All of these activities are hungry work, and handily, Fjordutsikten Camping has an on-site café selling everyday essentials. Order your breakfast or dinner at the café, then head to their fully-licensed bar to grab a drink to wash it down with. There are shops, restaurants and an airport in Lakselv, all within five minutes' drive of the site. A links golf course is also a five-minute drive away. Practise your swing, lest you be distracted by views of the blue water; it’s also on the shores of the fjord.

Local attractions

Drive 10 minutes northeast of the site, and you’ll reach a tour operator that can organise boat trips out on Porsangerfjorden (for fishing or leisure by yacht or speedboat). There's also a waterfront sauna run by the same organiser, which should be nice to look forward to after some time out on the water. In Stabbursdalen National Park (from 15 minutes’ drive), an eight-kilometre trail leads through pine forest to the Stabbursfossen Waterfall; several fishing spots are along the route, so you may want to bring along your rods. You could also challenge yourself to the walk (of around eight kilometres) to Stuorra Biŋalvárri, a small mountain 528 metres above sea level. How about a scenic drive further north towards Olderfjord (around an hour), too? There are restaurants, nice views over the fjord and dog-sledge safari activities running in the winter.
