Your Waitomo explorations don’t need to wait much longer: the pitches at YHA Waitomo Juno Hall are just 20 minutes’ walk away from Waitomo Caves, a huge North Island attraction with glowworms and zipwire and abseiling activities (all within five minutes’ drive of the site).
Set on a working farm with a chalet-style YHA hostel, the pitches are peaceful and have access to the spacious common areas in the main timber building. The site has a tennis court and, during high season, there’s also a saltwater swimming pool. The farm has horses, pigs, sheep and a deer; ask to get involved in handfeeding some of the smaller animals too.
This is a rural location, so aside from being within walking distance of the caves, a short drive is needed to reach other attractions like Otorohanga Kiwi House (15 minutes’ drive away) and Marokopa Falls (35 minutes’ drive). There is an outdoor activity centre five minutes’ drive away that organises raft expeditions into Ruakuri Cave, known for its glowworms.
There is a small shop and places to eat within 25 minutes’ walk of the site. However, bigger grocery shops are in Otorohanga, 10 minutes’ drive away.
