- Dog-friendly pitches on a quiet working farm with a YHA hostel
- Under a mile from Waitomo Caves and close to rafting and ziplines
- Tennis court and high-season pool on site; meet and feed animals
Ready to explore the world-famed attractions of Waitomo? You'll be in pole position at YHA Waitomo Juno Hall, where the grass pitches are less than a mile from the magical glowworm caves and within easy reach of a collection of adventure activities including rafting, abseiling and ziplining.
As you'll no doubt have guessed from the name, this site is within the grounds of a YHA hostel, and that means camping guests have access to the spacious common areas inside the main chalet-style building (with facilities like a launderette, wifi, lockers, a fridge and a TV room as well as the usual toilets and showers).
There’s a tennis court on site here, and a saltwater swimming pool that's open in high season for a cool dip. And as there's also a working farm on site, you can take a gentle wander to see the horses, pigs, sheep and deer or ask to get involved in handfeeding some of the smaller animals. Dogs are welcome on site, but because of the animals you'll need to keep them on a lead.
The area around the caves has a small shop and a few places to eat; for a bigger selection you'll need to head to Otorohanga, 10 minutes’ drive away. And there are attractions beyond the caves too – while you’re out and about in the local area, you may also like to check out things like Otorohanga Kiwi House and Marokopa Falls.

Local attractions
The Waitomo Caves are the big attraction around here, of course – and there are several ways to experience them. The classic cave tour involves a boat ride into the caves, looking up at thousands of glowworms as you hear stories of the caves' history and significance from your guide (often direct descendants of the Māori chief who first explored the place).
That’s a lovely way to see the main attraction, and if you only have time for one trip, this should be it. There are more adventures to be had though, if you want them – the activity centre next to the hostel organises thrilling underground rafting expeditions and another a couple of minutes away has abseiling. Above ground (by quite some way) are the Waitomo Caves Ziplines (three minutes' drive) for a taste of treetop life.
Away from the caves, you may like to hike in Mangaokewa Reserve (20 minutes) or see the cascades at Marokopa Falls (35 minutes) and Omaru Falls (40 minutes). And you can also get up close to the country’s cute national bird at Otorohanga Kiwi House (15 minutes).
