- Family-run site 10 minutes' walk from the village of Wieringerwerf
- Close to walks and bike rides through tulip fields and along the coast
- A 10-min drive from Lutjestrand beach; half an hour from Callantsoog
‘Land from the sea’ proclaims the name of this North Holland site, and it could hardly be more appropriate, as family-run Camping Land uit Zee is in a handy spot for both coast and countryside.
As is so often the case in the Netherlands, there are lots of quiet paths in the immediate surrounds for days of strolling and cycling. These particular paths stretch all the way to the coast, so you can pedal all the way to the beach at Lutjestrand in half an hour or so for seaside days of swimming, watersports or sunbathing by the IJsselmeer. Looking a little beyond that, it’s a half-hour drive to the North Sea resort of Callantsoog, where the sands stretch forth for many a kilometre.
Swing by in spring to take in the tulip fields that burst into colour around these parts; year-round attractions worth putting on your ’to-visit’ list also include animal parks, a car museum and a gorgeous fairytale-style castle.
Between outings, there’s plenty of space to chill out back at the tree-filled site, with little to distract from the important business of relaxing. Facilities simply include wifi, a washing-up area and smart, sparklingly clean bathrooms; shops, restaurants and a swimming pool are 10 minutes’ walk away in the little village of Wieringerwerf.

Local attractions
Beach days of all varieties are within easy reach here – active types should plot a course to Lutjestrand beach (10 minutes’ drive) for days of windsurfing and paddleboarding, while those seeking long stretches of family-friendly sands may prefer to aim for Callantsoog (half an hour). There are some fab coastal walks around the seaside town too, and it’s home to the country’s oldest official nudist beach, helping folk top up that all-over tan since 1973.
This area is a prime spot for those seeking scenery centred around that Dutch icon, the tulip. Around April and May, the colourful fields put on a stunning show, best visited at Kwekerij Siem Munster farm (five minutes’ drive) or Land van Fluwel (half an hour), a park that’s also worth a trip throughout the year for its interactive displays, adventure playground and kids’ tractor rides.
Away from the beaches and blooms, there’s plenty more to see, including the medieval Radboud Castle (20 minutes) and the fancy cars at Automuseum Schagen (25 minutes). There’s a fab collection of exotic creatures to meet at Van Blanckendaell Park zoo (half an hour) and another that’s been looked after at Landgoed Hoenderdaell (25 minutes), a rehab centre with bird of prey demos and an island full of lemurs.
