If you’re happiest striding out in walking boots or cycling down waterways, you’re in the right place at Den Heijkant, a peaceful, small-scale and friendly farm site in the leafy North Brabant countryside. Just five minutes’ drive from the rural village of Moergestel and 15 minutes by bike from the cafés and galleries of lively Oisterwijk, it’s designed for motorhomes – the neatly maintained paved pitches have electric hook-ups and are divided by neat rows of hedging for extra privacy. The pitches have views over the adjoining vineyard, which you can tour with a choice of three wines from the on-site café, which is open during the day between Thursday and Sunday. You can refuel on regional snacks like deep-fried bitterballen and sharing platters of cured meats and Dutch cheeses, or enjoy local beers on the terrace while watching cattle graze in surrounding fields. Picture-perfect villages, pine forests and sand dunes surround the site, all criss-crossed with cycling and walking routes. You can order teas, coffees and lunches to take on your daily jaunts too – please just let the café staff know the day before your intended trip.

First stop for the walkers among you might be the Oisterwijk Forests and Fens nature reserve (10 minutes’ drive), where there’s a popular looped walk around several ponds – keep an eye open for kingfishers and woodpeckers as you go. The Moergestels Broek wetlands (also 10 minutes) and heathlands of Kampina nature reserve (15 minutes) also make for peaceful and gentle family strolls. The extensive network of cycle routes nearby make it easy to explore local villages. You can reach lively Oisterwijk in 15 minutes by bike to browse the town’s souvenir shops, cafés and art galleries. The kids will most likely be entertained by the bizarre installations in the sculpture park too. Other family days out might include the rollercoasters and fairytale-themed woodland walks at Efteling theme park (25 minutes), or a visit to Beekse Bergen (15 minutes), where you can spot elephants, zebras and giraffes on drive-through safaris or take boat cruises to see rhinos wallowing in the water.
