- Peaceful, welcoming and family-friendly site 2.5km from Beers
- A 20-minute drive from Nijmegen
- Play area, tricycles, guest kitchen, bike hire and gnome path
Three cheers for this Dutch delight in charming countryside, just outside a place called Beers.
Peaceful, friendly and family-friendly Landgoed de Barendonk is two and half kilometres from the North Brabant town of Beers, about 17 kilometres to the south of Nijmegen.
It's in green surroundings well placed for nature spotting as well as activities: on a farm in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and with walking and cycling from the grounds (the farm is on the Netherlands' national cycle network). Friendly owners Liesbeth and Jan Hermanussen-Thijssen are to hand with suggestions and tips on what to see and do around the Barendonk and this quiet countryside, and have put together a tourist file for each guest with local information.
Facilities include a play area, a gnome path, tricycles to take out around the grounds, and bike hire for pedalling further. There's also free wifi, toilets and showers, and a fully-equipped kitchen with coffee maker, washing machine, spin dryer, fridge and freezer. Supermarkets and restaurants are at the village of Mill, three kilometres away.
Guests can pick from sunny or more shaded pitches. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed and there's a special area set aside where you can build a small fire.

Local attractions
The fortified town of Grave (10 minutes) makes for an interesting half-day trip. The Museum there charts the story of its two sieges while over at the Thompson bridge you can learn how a more recent war was fought and won by a quick thinking US army lieutenant.
Mook (15 minutes) is a pretty town on the Maas river, so tranquil it's hard to believe the quantity of battles that raged on the nearby Mookerheide. Now a fab and forested nature reserve laced with hiking and biking trails, it bears the scars of 17th-century skirmishes and the craters from World War Two shelling.
It's 20 minutes' drive to Nijmegen, oldest city in the Netherlands and first recorded by the Romans who built a fort nearby. The town bears the traces of its long history, not least the battering it took in 1944 from the US airforce, who thought they were bombing the close-by German town of Kleve. It's home to an excellent art museum, a Velorama devoted to bicycle history and the very fine Valkhof Park containing Roman ruins and riverside picnic spots. Kleve (35 minutes) is just over the border in Germany, justly loved for its hilltop castle and modern art museum.
