  • Teenage-friendly lakefront site a 15-minute drive from Drachten
  • De Spitkeet open-air museum 10 minutes’ drive; Groningen half an hour
  • Sand and grass beaches; playground; indoor pool; animation programmes
Your teenage children have worked hard at school all year, so when it’s time to reward them for their good grades, you might consider taking them to Europe Tents at Camping Strandheem, in the northern Dutch province of Groningen. A warning, though: you might not see much of them until the end of the holiday. After making friends with their contemporaries, they will likely spend most of their time in or by the on-site lake, whether swimming, diving from the floating platforms or canoeing. Meanwhile, grown-ups can chill on the 30-hectare beach (with both grass and sandy sections), maybe keeping an eye on your younger children as they climb, slide and swing in the playground. Activity programmes for different age groups (and in both Dutch and English) should ensure that annoying younger siblings don’t cramp the teenagers’ style – and vice versa, of course. An indoor pool complete with inflatable slides is a popular spot for small kids to splash around in, and when it comes to gathering the troops for some quality time together, you might decide to hit the miniature golf course or any of the sports courts (from volleyball and basketball, to tennis) for a family tournament. Accommodation is in large tents with a sheltered outdoor area where you can sit, relax and enjoy family meals. In addition to a food shop on site and a snack bar where you can order takeaway food, there are supermarkets in the nearby towns of Surhuisterveen (10 minutes’ drive), Marum (10 minutes) and Drachten (15 minutes).

Local attractions

The open-air museum De Spitkeet (10 minutes’ drive) has a collection of old dwellings that reveal just how harsh life was here in the 19th century. The poor might have lived in a cave-house or a ‘spitkeet’, a basic accommodation built of soil and rushes, for example. Another interesting exhibit here is a hiding place where teenage boys would gather to avoid German troops during World War II. The wetlands of De Alde Feanen National Park (20 minutes) can be explored on foot, by bike or (arguably the best way) from the water. If you’re happy to move under your own steam, there are paddleboard and canoe routes; if not, you can book a tour on a sailing boat. Colourful, spiky and geometrical, the canalside Groninger Museum in Groningen (half an hour) houses archaeological treasures, paintings by the likes of Van Gogh and Rubens, and temporary shows, including the Children’s Biennale (in even years), with interactive exhibits.
