Your Dutch aquatic adventures await. The family-friendly Friesland site Camping Nij Wybranda is excellently set for all things watery: the Friesland lake district areas of Sneek and Grou are each within 20 minutes’ drive. Not into that? Sneek’s also a fine spot for museums, nightclubs, restaurants and loads of events (including the famed sailing festival Sneekweek; if messing around in boats isn’t your thing, sit back and watch others handle the ropes). Grou’s also a pleasant place to spend non-watery hours, and Camping Nij Wybranda’s setting also has it 25 minutes from the old cities of Franeker and Bolsward and half an hour from the coast at Harlingen. Peaceful times await back at base, as Nij Wybranda is set on a farm where your juniors are welcome to come along, meet the animals and help out with feeding them with their dinners. And speaking of which… wherever you roam in the world, you should sample as much of the local food (and vino) as poss; how fortuitous then that the site sells farm meat, honey and ice cream in its well-stocked shop, as well as supplying warm rolls, goats’ cheese and curd on request. More supplies are in the village of Boazum, a kilometre and a half from the site.

Liked: Quiet peaceful site. On a farm with goats, sheep and cows. Father-in-law very informative about the area. Good centre to visit Sneek & Harlingen. Excellent cycling area.

Disliked: If wet the pitches would be muddy

The village of Boazum is delightful and the location good for access to the many attractions of Friesland.

Liked: Sehr netter Empfang. Eine traumhafte Ruhe. Selten so gut geschlafen. Der Platz war eben und trocken. Der Bauer hat mit den Kindern eine Kuh gemolken. Sehr Kinder und Tierlieb. Mit dem Fahrrad konnte man den sehr schönen Ort Sneek besuchen. Grou ist auch empfehlenswert. Rundum gelungenes Pfingstwochenende. Wir kommen bestimmt einmal wieder.

Local attractions

If you’re up for watery times, Sneek has plenty of options to get you ready to launch yourself onto its canals and waterways: there are plenty of mooring sites along the banks and you can set out on several sailing routes from here – ask for details at the tourist office. Sailing lessons and motorboat/boat hire are also easily available. Town and city sightseeing and shopping are a cinch around here too, at Sneek (have a mosey around the maritime museum), and at Leeuwarden (25 minutes), proud holder of the title European Capital of Culture for 2018. This latter is a stellar place for architecture enthusiasts, with over 800 national heritage buildings; see too the Fries Museum looking into art, culture and history (not chips). Further afield, both Amsterdam and Germany’s Meppen are about an hour and a half away. And if the kids are weeping with laughter at the thought of being architecture enthusiasts on their hols? Cart them off to Aeolus, the big amusement park 35 minutes away.
